Meet Noel Lito Sayson, laser physicist

1) What do you do? My research is mainly focused on developing a low-cost, low-power, widely tunable optical source suitable for mid infrared spectroscopy.

2) Where do you work? I work at Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology in Iligan City, Philippines. But I took a study leave since 2016 to pursue my dreams in life.

Currently, I am a PhD student doing experiments with the Nonlinear Optics and Photonics lab at The University of Auckland, New Zealand. Our group’s website is https://laserlab.blogs.auckland.ac.nz/

Ever wondered why Argon keeps coming up for topics of detecting particles or lasers or electric current?.. This article goes over Argon’s use in a laser. While working at Cymer (a laser manufacturing corporation) Argon ion lasers were used and then compounds of Argon (things such as Argon and Fluorine). I was a Physics major so I never thought about until now.

DUNE is being constructed using Argon and I recalled the shop workers removing Argon-Fluorine compound dust from old laser components and thought, hmm.. wonder if anyone else was wondering this question: Why Argon?

Add’l info: “Argon is used in situations where materials need to be protected from oxygen or other gases. 

A good example is an incandescent lightbulb, which consists of a metal wire inside a clear glass bulb. An electric current passes through the wire, causing it to get very hot and give off light.Oxygen will combine with the hot metal very easily, forming a compound of the metal and oxygen. This compound will not conduct an electric current very well, thereby causing the lightbulb to stop giving off light.

Argon, however, is used to prevent this from happening. Because argon is inert, it will not react with the hot wire, leaving the metal hot for very long periods of time. The lightbulb will stop giving off light only when the metal breaks. Then it can no longer carry an electric current.”
