Woods - Is it Honest. You remember the Monkees? You will...you will. This has more Monkees in it than Davy Jones jock-strap.
The first release since their sickly sweet Christmas album, She & Him's back with that familiar catchy melody and general sunshine dried lollypop sweetness. Does the job on a Friday arvo.
Hall of Mirrors - Love Child.
Creepy, rattling anti-love ballad about an indifferent father and his saddened daughter whose desperation leaves her as gloomy and empty as a winter beach. Chilling and scorching at the same time.
Candle Thieves- Balloon.
No lyrics, just love. Uplifting soundscape that could have been stripped from the vaults of a Disney soundtrack. Maybe a Lion King re-make made in the sky where Africa was a cloud. Simba could be a bird and pumpaa could be a...cumulus nimbus. This metaphor sucks, but this song doesn't.
Magnetic Fields - Andrew in Drag.
With an opening line "A pity she does not exist/A shame he's not a fag/ The only girl I ever loved was Andrew in drag" this is Stepin Merritt at his funniest and his quirkiest. Definitely one of the best songs I've heard about unrequited transvestite love in a long time.
The Rumour Said Fire- Sentimentally Falling.
Springing up from the seedlings of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and more recently Leader Cheetah, these roamers of the plain have produced one of the best songs I've heard in a long time. It came out last year, but I just discovered it and it was akin to discovering a hot shower. I have no idea who they are or where they are from, which makes it even more stardust for me. The perfect combination of old rock with a modern whimsical twist. Faultless.
Colourmusic- Tog.
Rockin' song. With a film that comes complete with people being drenched in cum and blood, it's a scary creature with a double feature. Part of me wants it to be fake whilst the other part - the part that secretly enjoys seeing people fall down stairs - wants it to be real.
