Krudas Cubensi (a.k.a Las Krudas) is a Cuban hip hop group made up of two (initially three) badass self-identifying black, queer, feminist vegan womyn named Olivia Prendes, Odaymara Cuesta and Odalys Cuesta (no longer a member of the group). The group started out as a street theatre group in the late 90′s named Topazancos, which combined community theatre, rap and visual arts. In 1999 they officially formed their hip hop group Krudas Cubensi.
The group writes music that is centred on intersectional feminism. Their lyrics draw attention to the struggles of queer black women and declare women’s ownership over their lives and their bodies. They sing about menstruation, size, race, sexuality and solidarity between women, among many other aspects of feminist struggle.
Beyond their lyrical content, Krudas Cubensi also challenges patriarchal domination through their participation in the male dominated genre of hip hop. They claim space for women in the hip hop scene and introduce themes that are often omitted from the genre. However, given their transcendent music and actions, it has been incredibly difficult for Krudas Cubensi to promote themselves and their messages. Thus, I wanted to share them with all of you!
Here are links to two songs by Krudas Cubensi entitled, “Kandela (English: “Candle” or “Fire”) and “Mi Cuerpo Es Mio” (English: “My Body is Mine”)
