LASTING SUPPER

it's never just a meal. meals celebrate moments and memories meals bring families together and through wafts, scents and tastes tell our stories. 

meals can be preloaded. sitting with us at table, the invisible guests:

unresolved emotions latent scripts broken hearts wounded memories fearful hopes urgent longings dreams and desires.

it’never just a meal. there’s the water, the towel calloused feet sore knees and the one syllable-verb ”do”

CAN YOU SPARE SOME CHANGE?

What good is It, I wonder, if the bread is changed and we are not?

What good is it if the wine is changed and we are not?

What difference does it make if the bread and the wine are radically transformed and we remain untouched, unchanged?

BE THIS IN MEMORY OF ME

What is the “this”? Can it be that “this” is more the bread and the wine?

Can it be that “this” is more than the real presence myopically conceived and understood, cause of so much fighting and division?

What if “this” refers to the radical and total gift of self, the removing of all outer garments, the wrapping a towel round our waist,

What if “this” is all about falling to the ground looking for feet to wash?

What of “this” is all about paying attention, becoming “really present” to the people around us becoming “really present” to the cry of the poor, the people on the edge and in the margin, the forgotten and the maligned?

What if “do this in memory of me” is also a eucharistic invitation to read between the lines: “be this in memory of me”?

LASTING SUPPER

it’s not over yet. it happened two thousand years ago yet still happening, as fresh as “now”

bread broken, blessed and given satisfying hungers

the cup, full and overflowing  quenching thirsts

the table of plenty rekindling the flame of easter joy.

celebrate not the last supper but the lasting supper.

ANOTHER LOOK AT THE LAST SUPPER

In a five-foot-wide oil painting, Polish artist Bohdan Piasecki adds seven women and two children to the commonly depicted gathering of twelve, dressing all 22 figures in Palestinian clothing.

Could Leonardo da Vinci and other artists possibly have skewed the scene?

What do you think? Can this rendering possibly be a more authentic last supper?
