“I’m a relative latecomer to Newman. If I’d come across him in my early teens like Billy Joel, he may well have been one of my favourite singer songwriters, but I didn’t, and so he was fairly untouched and unknowable. Realising my error, I picked this up a few years ago in a Record Fair for a couple of euros. That was a good purchase and this album, his third from 1972, provides an excellent primer to his work and songwriting style. . With such a distinctive voice (one perhaps most well-known these days for his Toy Story song You’ve Got A Friend In Me) a Randy Newman song is always going to sound like Randy Newman, one that can at times convey the humanity and truth of the great soul singers, as well as the wit and satirical sharpness of Tom Lehrer. . On this album he tackles American imperialism/arrogance (Political Science), how white slave traders might have ‘advertised’ slavery to Africans (Sail Away), a satirical view on religion (He Gives Us All His Love and God’s Song), the challenges of stardom, originally written for Frank Sinatra (Lonely At The Top) and a take on the absurdity of the erotic rock song (You Can Leave Your Hat On), repurposed by Tom Jones for The Full Monty film with no sense of irony whatsoever. . Although these days Newman is a busy and sought after composer of film scores and musical theatre, having received multiple awards and nominations for both, its great to go back to his roots and see why he is one of America’s greatest living songwriters...” .
