"New and Cheaper Edition," issued five years after Sampson Low's first U.K. edition, in a similar binding (showing Briant diving into the water from a giant kite) and with the same illustrations. In this tale, a dozen young boys are shipwrecked without adults on a desert island, and struggle to survive during the two years they await rescue; they divide into two antagonistic groups, with quite different philosophies. This adventure has often been cited as a precursor to William Golding's rather similar LORD OF THE FLIES (1954).
