"Despite our mundane lives, perhaps we make our own magic with words."
Hello! I’m Heather, 30s, Edinburgh, cat mum. This is my first post and first time using Tumblr so bear with me. I really wanted a safe space to share my current reads and post about all things books and stories.
I recently finished Vicious by V.E. Schwab and have decided I need to consume every book written by her ever! I read The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue about 5 years ago and adored it. I think it’s time for a reread for sure. Anyway, I gave Viscous 4.5 ⭐️ I thought the characters were incredible, especially Victor. Who doesn’t love a book with a likeable villain? Is Victor a villain? I think he is… he makes some pretty bad choices in this book, however he is absolutely redeemable and, without giving spoilers, already on that journey… His POV explains his choices and while I don’t agree with all of his actions, I understand them. And goddamn is he likeable as well!
I think Schwab is the master of time jumps and POV switches. She can bounce the reader back and forward in time and into different characters minds in such a way that it continues to build momentum rather than break it up. Each switch reveals more about the character, their drivers, how they got to where they are. Every character progresses the story, even from the past, and I think this is why I was able to fly through this book. This was also why I loved the POV from all the characters, even though I didn’t want to leave Victor’s view.
Has anyone else read this book? I really want to read the next book… but then the story will be over… until the third book comes out whenever that will be… Does anyone else delay reading certain books to keep the story alive?

“ The simplest means are those which best enable an artist to express himself. if he fears the banal he cannot avoid it by appearing stranger or going in for bizarre drawing and eccentric color. his means of expression must service almost of necessity from his temperament. he just have the humility of mind to beleive that he has painted only what he has seen. i like Chardins way of expressing it: “ i apply color until there is a resemblance.” Or Cezannes: “ I want to secure a likeness,” or Rodins: “copy nature!” Leonardo said : “ he who can copy, can create.” Those who work in a preconceived style, deliberately turn their backs on nature, miss the truth. an artist must recognize, “

"I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. (...)
I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet."
