enjoyed reservoir dogs more than i thought i would

so i just watched “the ninth gate” and, firstly, i guess i have to, somewhat reluctantly, acknowledge the fact that it was directed by roman polanski. i watched it on a random sight, where i usually watch movies anyway lately, so yes, i watched it illegally instead of on a streaming service so you can relax, i guess? because i’m not here to talk about the controversial, and honestly disturbing, director that, despite having made many great movies, almost made me not want to watch any more of them than i already have. but i did. so this is about the movie, not about him.

what was interesting to me was the contrast between how i felt throughout the movie vs how i felt at it’s end. i got pretty invested in the story. generally, i love horror and thriller so maybe it’s no surprise. but i got sucked into the story pretty quickly. i thought the movie had the same feel all those iconic thriller movies from the 90s and early 2000s have. as well as the acting, which was superb. johnny depp plays the main character and he’s present for 99% of the movie and he did a beautiful job. i’ve seen a lot of his movies at this point and i was so impressed by him in this one. i thought he had a completely different aura than ever before and it was hard to believe it was him. from his speech to his appearance, he embodied that character. the man that seemed to be cold and reserved yet ultimately fighting for what’s right. he seemed to have interest in the supernatural and the books which he had to examine and compare but he didn’t seem to have interest in evil the way many other characters did. he didn’t seem to want to use it or be a part of any of it. in fact, he seemed to want to figure it out but to get away from it as well. it seemed to have scared him, haunted him against his will. of course this is my own impression but i don’t think it’s an uncommon one. that is why the ending was surprising and felt somewhat out of place. i read that the book, which the movie was based on, had a different ending and one that made more sense to me. the idea that corso (johnny depp) would end up being so haunted by the evil that he would end up surrendering to it doesn’t seem right. it’s more than surrendering, now that i think about it. it was more seeking it out. it might have been an interesting change, had it been suggested anywhere throughout the movie that he had a desire to do so. but it came out of the blue and seemed inconsistent with corso’s character. so my point is, while i found myself enjoying the movie more than i thought i would, the more it approached the end, the more i found myself disappointed by it. i feel like it didn’t get the closure it deserved. or rather, corso didn’t get the ending he deserved. having said all that, i guess i would still recommend the movie to people who are interested in these themes, it’s a good ride, just prepare for disappointment and confusion at the end.
