My material grandmother, Margaret Rose Laturno Gilbert, shown here standing on the far right, next to her father Joseph Lawrence Laturno (Letourneau). This photo was taken in 1893, when they were living in Ida Grove, Iowa. My grandmother is about 6 years old in this photo. She lived to the ripe age of 96. Growing up in the Hollywood District in Portland, Oregon, Grandma Gilbert lived just two blocks from our house on NE 48th. In the late 60's and early 70's she was still living at the same home she'd lived since 1936, just a few years after they arrived in Portland, from the family's longtime home in Schaller, Iowa. We were fortunate to see her often, as Mom would have her over for dinner a few times each week. She remained in very good health, until about 1981 when she had a fall in her basement and broke her hip. This Laturno Family portrait of Joe & Mary Laturno includes From left, James "Jimmy" Elmer Laturno, Mary Martha Delaware (Drouin) Laturno, (baby) Elizabeth Delphine Laturno, standing Joseph Francis Laturno, (front) Agnes Kathleen Laturno, (standing) Mary Elizabeth Laturno, Joseph "Joe" Lawrence Laturno, Margaret Rose "Maggie" Laturno. Joe and Mary went on to have three more children after this photo was taken - Raymond (born 1895), Emma (born 1898), Mabel (born 1900).
