"Lay it down, Lockie. Hari is gone."
Some ending of episode 1 art
Secret of St. Kilda - Justice
I just listened to the new episode of Secret of St. Kilda, and, of course, I have thoughts.
The biggest one is about Lockie's past. I figured it would come back to bite him on the ass, but I didn't expect it to be so soon. I knew he was a con artist and the fraud charges would be there, but I did not expect the murder charge and conviction. I highly suspect there's more to the story than what the papers said, but for now, I'm reserving judgement on that part.
Secondly, there seems to be some sort of a connection between Lockie and his family and Dubrach. It sounds distinctly like Lockie's daughter was having dreams of Solasaich, and it scared her. That, combined with whatever it was speaking through Andromeda in the first episode, is setting up something major.
Third, Mathias fucked up in a pretty major way and he now knows it. He should never have taken justice into his own hands without at least talking to Andromeda first. As the injured party and the leader of the cult, any action taken against Lockie should have been her decision. I think he's basically ended his friendship with Andromeda, and will have to grovel long and hard to get back into her good graces after this.
He's also alienated himself from at least one close friend in the end by implying that criminals are okay only if they're idiots. But Georgie was right. If Mathias keeps going on this path, he's probably going to end up dead or worse.
And that brings me to what's next.
I mentioned the something that possessed Andromeda in the first episode. It said, "Brother, you imprisoned me and stole my name and power. And now I see your descendants coming to stop me, But I will not stop until our presence..."
Factoring in the scene with Lockie and his daughter, I think that somehow, Lockie is directly tied in with Solasaich. There's also the implication that somehow, Solasaich managed to disguise himself as Dubrach and stole his power, which has some interesting implications for the question of just what the hell the cult on St. Kilda is worshipping.
The story of the First Follower was an interesting piece of lore, but I'm not sure where and how it fits in yet
It sounds like there's going to be an all-out war between Dubrach and Solasaich coming, with the people on St. Kilda having to either take sides or take cover, and it's going to cause a major split in the community.
The fact that Andromeda stripped the island council of their rank and duties has set up a major shift in power, and that vacuum is going to have to be filled. It's just going to be a question of who she chooses to fill the positions and why.
On the subject of the love triangle, it's obvious at this point that Mathias doesn't have a chance with Andromeda, and not just because she doesn't have a thing for redheads. When he took justice into his own hands, he pretty much ended that possibility.
They haven't told us enough about the relationship between Andromeda and Lockie for me to really have a handle on why she trusts him, or what made her decide to bring him into the fold so early in his time on the island. The fact she got directly involved and has taken personal responsibility for him implies that she knows something, but there's no explanation as to why or how she knows it.
On the subject of Mathias and Lockie's relationship, I have a feeling that if things go south in a major way, they may end up as reluctant allies. If they do end up working together, it will be with gritted teeth and no love lost between them. If nothing else, the one thing they can agree on is that they love Andromeda.
On the subject of Mathias, it's clear at this point that the one thing that's really driving him is jealousy. Lockie is better with people than he is, and he's apparently won Andromeda's heart. The question is, will it destroy him in the end, or will he pull his head out of his ass and let it go? At this point he probably has very few friends on the island and he will have to step carefully.
I said it before, and I'll say it again. War is coming to St. Kilda on more than one level, and it'll be interesting to see what comes of it.
Secret of St. Kilda - Forgiveness
Well. This last episode was...interesting.
I still am not sure what to think of Lockie. I knew going in that he was a con artist, and God knows he is charming, but I'm not sure if I like him. I know he's trying to be a good man, but I don't know if he actually is.
If you didn't know about the money, his agenda, and Esther's agenda, the scenes between him and her and her just wanting to spend the little time she had left enjoying life were almost sweet. Factoring those in, it's actually a little creepy, especially considering what else we've seen of his life before he came to St. Kilda.
The fact he took a cut of the insurance money and didn't tell her brother anything about what was actually going on left me feeling a little sick for having thought he was a good man.
That being said, I don't think Preston and Esther had quite the good relationship that he said they did. If nothing else, it was obvious that Esther didn't feel comfortable telling Preston that she'd made her peace with the fact she was going to die, and that she didn't want him to keep dragging her to every faith healer he could find. Even in the runup to her death, I don't think Preston ever accepted that it was going to happen. Maybe if he had, he would never have sought out Lockie.
I know they mentioned at the beginning of the series that the people of the island faked the deaths of people who came there to stay, but to actually hear about the aftermath - about the police and the people's loved ones actually finding the body - was not only heartbreaking, especially since they introduced Lockie's daughter in one of the first couple of episodes and we saw just how close they were. What they're doing on the island is morally grey at best and I think it's easy to forget that.
Honestly, it's no wonder Preston showed up on St. Kilda with a gun.
The most immediate question, of course, is who got shot. If it were Lockie, I'd almost say he had it coming, but if it was Wee Mary, she did not deserve it. I have a feeling that she's an institution on St. Kilda, and if she gets hurt or dies, there will be hell to pay.
As a side note, I have to say that the American accents in this were absolutely atrocious. They kept slipping back into their own accents and it was distracting.
St. Kilda - Determination and Curiosity
Apologies for skipping a week. I've been struggling with writer's block, and I am hoping that this may help me break it. Also, last week's episode felt like setup for what was to come.
So. The past two weeks, we've had more than a few developments.
First of all, we've gotten some information as to why Andromeda is so determined to have Lockie in her life. Her family's curse is killing her, and she thinks he can heal her. More to the point, she thinks Dubrach himself led Lockie to the island to do that.
Which brings us to this week, where we find out that Lockie's con artistry extended to being a bogus faith healer. And not only has his past come back to bite him in the ass, he's been put in the position where he's going to have to prove he can do what he claimed he could.
I do have to agree with Lockie on the subject of the journals. It seems odd that Cormac, who had been fairly verbose on paper, would suddenly clam up at a point, and that he wouldn't say a word in his journals about his little daughter Andromeda. There was some kind of major change in there, and Andromeda was probably too little to notice it or to know what happened. And, for my money, if there were journals missing, they've probably been destroyed.
I noticed that the fallout from that first ritual and the aftermath is still coming. The immediate political fallout has yet to hit, I think, but it's going to cause a lot upheaval when it does.
It's kind of heartbreaking that Angelique wouldn't even sell Wee Mary any cat foot because she decided to side with Mathias. Poor Toast was an absolute innocent in the whole mess and did not deserve that.
And on the subject of our favorite red-haired disaster area, does Mathias actually have any relationships that he hasn't screwed up in some way, shape, or form?
He alienated probably both of the Torrence brothers, and I can't see Wee Mary wanting anything to do with him. And given what happened after the attempted ritual, I can't see him being too popular with the community in general.
Whatever relationship he's got with Andromeda is probably gone after his attempted coup (whether that was what he actually intended or not) and trying to throw Lockie into a bottomless pit.
His relationship with Niyathi is probably shaky at best, considering she's his ex-wife and that they should probably have never gotten together to begin with. He's been carrying a torch for Andromeda since he was kid, and I don't think he was her first choice, either. The fact she's quite definitely moved on from their relationship and is getting involved with Lockie is not going to help things any. At this point, I'd say that the only thing they have in common at this point is Hari.
Hari, of course, is still an adorable little kid, and I know people guessed that Mathias was his father just from the way they interacted in the first episode. I've gotten the impression that Mathias loves him dearly, but has no idea how the hell to relate to him. The only time that child showed any interest in being in his father's presence was when Mathias was going to get him ice cream and then make the phone call that probably brought Preston to the island looking for Lockie.
The backbone, however, I don't think is as literal a thing as Niyathi and Lockie seem to think it is. For my money, it's probably a person, though at this point, I don't know who, and I can't see Andromeda being happy with the idea of them poking around her family crypt while chasing a metaphor.
Personally, I suspect it might be Mathias, but I don't know if that's just because I have a minor crush on Ben Meredith (I like his voice!) or because he's the only other character with the potential for a major story arc. Mathias certainly sees himself as the backbone of the community, even though everyone else seems to see him as a pain in the ass. Plus, I like the idea of Mathias and Lockie becoming reluctant allies and even more reluctant friends while they deal with whatever's coming.
UPDATE: Just went back and realized that I had a paragraph out of order, and went back and fixed it. I have no idea how I managed to miss it the first time. Sorry about that.
“LOCKIE: (out of breath) You not gonna help, then?
NIYATHI: Oh, I'm not allowed to grave rob, remember? I'm only supervising the desecrating.
LOCKIE: Oh, great. I'm going to hell. Alone!
NIYATHI: Oh, wah. We used to come down here when we were teenagers. Should have been terrified, but oh, the bravado of youth.
[ANOTHER TOMB IS OPENED AND SIFTED THROUGH]
LOCKIE: Oh, aye? Doing weird rituals and sacrificing shit, huh? Lord Dubrach I offer thee a half can of Holyrood lager for my sins.
NIYATHI: (serious) Hey, these traditions are important, you should know that by now.”
