Helen receives an order for six paintings of winter scenes. Margy receives permission from Miss Pepper for the girls to spend a vacation at Elk Lodge so that Helen can complete her paintings. Someone has been staying at the lodge without permission. The intruder returns to steal most of the girls' food provisions and cuts the phone lines so that they are isolated from the outside world. The situation turns desperate after a deadly blizzard begins, leaving the girls snowbound. It is only with great courage that the girls find a means of survival and unclench themselves from the grip of certain death.

The series focuses on the various activities of a group of girls who form a Camping and Tramping Club.  As a result of the girls' outdoor activities they become known as the "Outdoor Girls" in their city of Deepdale.

Author Laura Lee Hope, is a pseudonym used by the Stratemeyer Syndicate for the Outdoor Girls, the Bobbsey Twins and several other series of children's novels.

It is decided that Grace and her friends will stay in the camp until Mr. Ford is able to travel north. Complications develop when Alice Jallow's family claims to own some of the Ford land. Upon the girls' arrival, they discover that Alice and her family are staying on the adjoining Jallow property and have placed a guard on the disputed land. This development is most unpleasant for Amy, who has repeatedly been the victim of Alice's unkind remarks about her past.
