(1) A field of black solidified lava lies alongside the grass in this wilderness near the volcano Mount Krafla in the Lake Mývatn area. (2) Three sheep graze in a field, oblivious to the black expanse of solidified lava which lies ahead. (3) Dimmuborgir is a forest of lava pillars near Lake Mývatn, Iceland, which has been likened to a ruined medieval castle.
Big lava bed, Skamania County, 2016.
A huge lava field covers much of Skamania County. Less than 10,00 years old, lava flow from a crater near the center of the bed provides limited opportunities for vegetation to root, and with only a few roads and trails across or into it, big lava bed is difficult to traverse.
