Lavabit, la messagerie chiffrée utilisée par Snowden est de retour, tout un symbole
Pour communiquer de manière sécurisée, Edward Snowden utilisait le service de messagerie cryptée Lavabit. En 2013, après les révélations sur Prism, le programme de surveillance de masse de la NSA, le service avait préféré fermer ses portes plutôt que de céder aux requêtes des autorités américaines, qui exigeaient sa collaboration pour accéder aux messages du lanceur d’alertes.
Presque quatre ans plus tard, Ladar Levison, le fondateur de Lavabit, annonce le grand retour de la messagerie. Celle-ci sera désormais payante, mais dotée en contrepartie d’un système encore plus sécurisé, de sorte que l’entreprise ne devrait plus être techniquement en mesure d’accéder aux requêtes des autorités. Edward Snowden a d’ores et déjà confirmé à The Intercept qu’il réactiverait son compte afin de témoigner son soutien à Lavabit.
Une annonce politique, et symbolique
La date choisie pour cette annonce, le 20 janvier 2017, est loin d’être le fruit du hasard. Il s’agit en effet du jour de l’investiture de Donald Trump, successeur de Barack Obama à la Maison Blanche.
Ladar Levison en a donc profité pour donner un accent résolument politique, et aussi symbolique, à son annonce : « Quelles que soient les opinions politiques de chacun, ce jour célèbre nos valeurs communes de liberté et de justice, que protège notre constitution (…) En août 2013, j’ai été forcé de faire un choix difficile : violer les droits du peuple américain et de mes utilisateurs, ou fermer. J’ai fait le choix de la liberté », écrit-il.
