Introduction to myself ‘Ywan Zing’ - Trainee Corporate Lawyer
Hello my name is Ywan Zing.
I am a Chinese exchange student (or I was until 3 months ago) that came over to Manchester to study international law at the University of Manchester.
After I graduated I wanted to find a graduate scheme that would allow me to further develop my skills in the area of international law.
I met legal recruitment specialist Paul Burgin during my time at Manchester University, after he lectured at one of my seminars. This was towards the end of the semester, after the exam period.
So I emailed Paul to ask him for some advice about future career plans. He graciously agreed to take time out of his schedule and meet up with me. After a few meetings with him we outlined exactly what career path I wanted to go down and eventually he outlined the exact job position that would fit my current skill-set and experience level.
Paul has being extremely influential and so very helpful in helping me find the perfect job. I now work for a huge international law firm based in London. This position has allowed me to develop my skills and I've certainly grown in confidence since starting this job as a Trainee Corporate Lawyer.
I would advise any law graduates to find a recruitment specialist and ask them for career advice, since they are experts with in the field.
Although graduates know the overall subject of the law, and the topics it entails. I would imagine that a lot of other students, like myself, will struggle to find graduate jobs within the legal industry by themselves. This leads them to the belief that postgraduate study is the only way to get a job within the law industry. With my case proving that this is not true, saving me thousands upon thousands of pounds in tuition fees and student loans.
In retrospect, I wouldn't have done anything differently, because I'm very happy with the job position that I have. The whole recruitment process was fairly simple, slightly nerve-racking at points, but it has really opened up doors for me.
