UN Plaza, designed by Lawrence Halprin and Mario Ciampi, San Francisco, 1975 “None of the great fountains of the world is brutal.” In this quote, the critic Allan Temko is talking about EMB’s fountain- but it still applies here- where he is referring to the “brutalist” architecture of the ’50s and ’60s characterized by rough concrete and rigid, blocky forms- not the intuitive choice to compliment flowing water. Various clips of me, filmed by @waylon.bone c. 2008 or so? I was deep in architecture school at the time and not skating much, but the one trick I could rely on with some confidence was jamming my nose into walls. Also think I met @aaron_herrington on one of these sessions. Rad dude! Miss seeing Aaron do his thing in person. Also shoutout to @tedbarrow for shining a light on Temko’s writing. Good to read some honest architectural criticism of Halprin. #lawrencehalprin #sanfranciscoarchitecture #landscapearchitecture #brutalism (at San Francisco, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTA66d8J37f/?utm_medium=tumblr
