MAJOR PROJECT 2
Book layout ideas.
page layouts
here i was looking for inspiration of page layouts rather than the overall publication and book binding techniques used. all of these have used a very simplistic and minimal design that i aim to use in my own book. i like the way that the images are positioned at the top of the page rather than the centre, it creates an interesting amount of blank space that i can use for either text, or a place for the viewer to take a breather and take in/appreciate the page. it creates a sense of space that we hold between ourselves and nature, a space where we should take the time to ground ourselves in the moment, and become more aware. a space to clear the mind. this adds to the soft approach of the project that i aim to come through in my publication
minimal publication layouts
in terms of the publication, if it was to be a book i would definitely go with a more minimalist approach. this is to counter-act the concept of information overload in our society, bringing in the meditative aspect of my project using a soft approach for the viewer
i am particularly fond of the simplicity of both of these layout designs. in the first one on the left, i appreciate the way the book is bound, it looks to be pamphlet binding, using simple stitching down the spine of the book, instead of staples. this leaves a beautiful minimalist finish, an aspect that i think will fit my project. i appreciate the way that the ‘full bleed’ pages still have a small border around them, a slight framing. i also like the use of blank pages, this would definitely add to my ‘soft’ approach
in the second layout design on the right, i find the orientation of the book inspiring. the shape is effective especially for landscape photography. it also includes text, which i aim to do in my own publication, although, only a small amount
seeing these two designs have shown me that i don’t think having a hard cover on my book would be effective for the aesthetics of my project. i want the publication itself to represent the context of my concept, soft and simple (but to the point) however, a hard cover isn’t out the window until i conduct further experiments and research
newspaper layout design
whilst looking at layout inspiration for my publication, i had the idea of looking into newspaper designs. a way to publish imagery, that sits in theme with our ‘throw away’ culture. one of the aims of my project is to inspire people to slow down, ground themselves in the moment, and appreciate what we have before it is too late. newspapers play a part in the constant bombardment of imagery and information that we receive, so adapting them to raise awareness would be an interesting way to publicise the project. the downside of this would be encouraging the ‘throw away’ culture. although, this could in turn make an individual appreciate the newspaper, meaning there’s more chance of them keeping it over leaving it
“around 80% of UK-made paper utilises recovered paper which is by far the biggest source of recyclate from domestic waste streams”
by making the publication from 100% recycled materials, this would mean that the process of making the newspaper would cause less harm climatically due to the ‘quick print’ caused by mass production. it would also make it easier to distribute, to reach and inspire as many people as possible
