The winter flowering Iris lazica (Lazistan iris) is closely related to Iris unguicularis but has deeper blue flowers and glossy, wider green leaves. Iris lazica thrives in part shade and does well in heavier soils, so there is a winter flowering Iris species for most sites.

The winter and early spring flowering evergreen Iris lazica (Lazistan iris) is a rhizomatous perennial. The flowers are found between the arching, glossy green leaves. Plants tolerate a shady location so are ideal at the base of shrubs at the edge of a winter garden border. This shade tolerant species is a relative of the sun-loving winter flowering Iris unguicularis (Algerian iris).
