The last time Aiolia had seen the boy, he had been bleeding and inconsolable, but alive and angry. His eyes had been flashing with perceived injustice, his skin flushed and sweaty from a match well fought but ultimately lost.
The boy's master had been trying to explain that losing the cloth to another was not the end, when Aiolia had come to pass along the Pope's instructions on what would follow.
The boy had not wanted to hear it and stormed out of the small hospital hut. Aiolia had left his message with the boy's master, to be delivered after tempers cooled down.
Looking at the frail, desiccated remains now, all that he could think of was that the boy did not deserve to meet an end like this.
It was only the day after. His heart was gaping, bled empty, and Hashirama was nowhere to be found. Tobirama took a deep breath.
“Where’s your brother?” Butsuma demanded. He had always had a knack for inconvenience.
“Which one?” Tobirama replied, a glint in his eye.
He knew what would follow, saw the slap coming like a bystander outside his own body, and braced himself. Better to deflect than admit he had no answer to give.
Seika’s smile was so unbearably lighthearted that it inspired disgust. It shattered on contact with Marin's stony expression.
“Would you– would you rather stay here?” Seika tried again, enthusiasm evaporating quickly. Her eyes skipped between Marin’s bloodshot right eye and her normal one.
He was the one holding the blade and the Senju was the one in shackles but, from the way Kagami’s hands trembled, one would think it was the other way around.
“Useless child,” he heard his master growl behind him, before he got slapped on the side of the head.
The kunai slipped and clattered across the flagstones, as Kagami cupped his ear like that would help stop the ringing.
“If your roles were reversed, do you think he’d hesitate?!” his master yelled.
Kagami shook his head and regretted it immediately – it only made his head hurt worse. Now confronted with the prisoner’s cold stare and his master’s burning rage both, it was twice as hard to get his feet to move.
The last thing Kagami saw before getting blasted backwards was the reflection of his own spinning sharingan on the Yamanaka’s vacant blue eyes.
“Mind-Body Switch comple—” His opponent cut himself off from gloating in Kagami’s voice with a shriek. “What the fuck?!!”
[...]
“You didn’t really think I could only put others under genjutsu, did you?”
The Yamanaka’s panic peaked when he formed the hand seals to break his technique and nothing happened: Kagami retained enough control to disperse the chakra flowing through his body, trapping the two of them in a waiting game of who outlasted who.
Just a short Senju bros ficlet, because I needed some Kawarama in my life today.
They were walking home side by side, when Tobirama realized that all he could hear were his own footsteps. He stopped and turned, and there was Kawarama, stooped to dig up something from the side of the road.
"Don't tell me you found another one," he called back. Tobirama's younger brother had been pausing every other minute to pick up stones that caught his attention. There were dozens of them by now.
Rather than answer, Kawarama ran up to him, brushing dirt from his newest find. His pockets clacked with each step.
"Look! Look what I found!" He held out half of a ceramic teacup, painted with a green pattern that might have been a tree, at some point. Kawarama could not pull his eyes away from it. "Isn't it pretty?"
Tobirama sighed and turned to continue walking.
"Maybe, once. When it was whole," he said.
Kawarama's clacking pockets followed him down the road.
"Don't say that. Someone made this cup, you know? Put their effort into it, so other people could use it and display it in their home. They made the clay, shaped it and cooked it. Then made the ink, and painted all this, one stroke at a time. It must have taken days or weeks to get it right!"
Tobirama huffed a laugh. His brother was a hoarder. He kept collecting all sorts of useless junk because – so he claimed – it was disrespectful to the craftsmen and artisans to abandon it. He took the broken cup from Kawarama's hands to judge the latest find for himself.
"Isn’t it great?" Kawarama asked.
Tobirama hummed. It didn't look like anything special to him. The green was too dark, more reminiscent of mould than live greenery, and the brush strokes on the inside surface were too visible and uneven. The break had to be recent. The edges were still sharp enough to tear skin if mishandled.
"Somehow I doubt it was made by one of the greats," he commented.
Kawarama pouted and reclaimed his find.
"Whatever. Someone still put their all into making it the best they could. That has to count for something!"
Tobirama looked over fondly, prepared to remind his brother that there was only so much space in their bedroom. He would have to be more judicious, picking what he took with him. His eyes glanced over the scars on Kawarama's cheek, though. Suddenly, he understood exactly what his brother meant.
Their mother had cried so much with the first cut. And Itama had already been old enough to remember the time he got the second. On both occasions, Tobirama had been the one to tend to the wound and to keep his little brother entertained, so he would not poke at the itchy bandages. Kawarama had been giving his all then, too, in the face of their father's insurmountable expectations. Sometimes, Tobirama still noticed the way his lower eyelid was slower to blink on that side from the damaged nerves.
"You're right. I suppose someone did." He bumped his shoulder against Kawarama's. "I just don't know where you plan to keep it. Your closet's already full of junk."
They were all of them a little bit broken, after all.
