it’s a really sad situation for someone to do something like that.  that was a named moderator of a zine too and they still scammed people.  

please be careful and informed when applying to / purchasing zines.  you might run into a bad mod anyways even if you’re careful, but try to make good decisions if possible!  if the mods don’t seem trustworthy or accountable (e.g. they’re anonymous so they can’t be held accountable, they keep dodging questions about important issues or they stay deliberately vague, etc.), i suggest fact-checking and/or finding something else because it could be a scam if any exchange of money is involved.

sometimes it’s tempting to stay in a project bc it’s your first one, or it’s about something you really love, but my advice is that sometimes ditching it will save you a lot of stress and heartache if it goes badly down the road.  there will always be more chances, but a bad experience can really sour your love of something for a long time.
