MUSIC MONDAY 天涯歌女/ Tiānyá gēnǚ/ The Wandering Songstress

This is a remix of an iconic song from the 1937 Chinese film “Street Angel” by electronic music duo Shanghai Restoration Project ft. Zhang Le. The film, one of China’s early releases with sound, told the story of a family from the North of China travelling to Shanghai having fallen on hard times, and the abuses the two daughters suffer at the hands of their guardians, as well as the doomed romance which blossoms between one of the sisters and a local street musician. 

“The Wandering Songstress” is one of the most famous love songs in China, and has been used in both Chinese films such as “Lust, Caution”, and international releases like “Paris, je t’aime”.
