what was maggie's first day on the job like? was she more nervous or more excited? did she have to prove herself a lot as not only a woman but a woc?
despite the fact that she’s (usually) pretty cool under pressure, i’d say she was a nervous wreck the first day on the job. she would’ve been fresh out of college/the academy - so, very young - and really wanting to prove herself. her father became the sheriff of his town through the hardships that he faced when he immigrated. despite the fact that maggie was no longer in contact with him when she started, there’s no doubt she would want to make him proud, even if he never saw her accomplishments. which, it turns out, he did. she wanted to achieve the things that he did, and maybe even go beyond that. i think what taught her to be cool under pressure was doing her job and making mistakes and just good ol’ fashioned experience.
being a workaholic is pretty much one of the most important parts of her character. her work bleeds into her life, there isn’t really a line that separates them anymore. especially when she meets alex and gets tangled up with the deo. i’d say her being a workaholic is a result of it being the one place where she can make a difference and control the outcomes of people’s lives. she wasn’t able to do that with her own life, so she tries to help others. also, she believes heavily in alien rights, so there’s that.
now she’s a woc/wlw who’s a homicide detective in a specialised field. she can talk for hours to resolve a hostage situation. she solved an 18 year old cold case that nobody else could solve. she jumps headfirst into cases that other detectives won’t even touch. while her father would probably like to think that it’s because of the things he taught her, it was all her hard work and sacrifice that made it possible.
