I believe for American women, one of the greatest fears and areas of bondage is self-consciousness. Self-consciousness. Listen to that term. Our culture and the media enculturate self-consciousness into us as women. How do I look? How do I dress? What’s my hair like? How am I doing? How do I walk? When our sense of well-being is determined by a little machine on the bathroom floor with numbers, and that determines how confident we feel, we have bondage. Jesus didn’t set us free to walk in self-consciousness. Jesus sets us free to walk in God-consciousness. So we walk through our days. In the morning I have to pray 'Jesus, I lift my heart, my eyes, my spirit to You today.' I’m not going to be focused on Beth. It’s absolutely crippling. I don’t walk before men and women ultimately. I’m going to walk and cultivate a sense of awareness in God and His presence— The One who is the Author and Finisher of my faith. That is liberating! My challenge to women is if we walk in self-consciousness, pray and ask God to deliver us.
