This is such a vague criticism but I HATE when stories (and even fandom) name something and it's just. It's just Latin. It's literally just Latin.
Like okay okay okay you wanna do something recognisable and easy (ERR WRONG LATIN IS NOT EASY TRUST ME) but Latin is quite literally the most generic and boring choice you could've chosen. Like honestly. Everybody uses Latin. Why not have it be Turkish??? Or Hindi??? Or hell, how about one of the MANY languages from Africa?!?!??? I'm just sick and tired of everything being LATIN. FFS it's literally just Complicated English at this point. Urghh
ON TOP OF THAT. These people that choose their Big Important Names to be Latin are unintentionally creating a huge plot hole!!! What do you mean your fantasy story has Latin!!!!!!! Where the fuck did that come from!!!!!!!!!!!! Like listen if you're gonna introduce a dominant language for these characters I'm gonna make one of two assumptions
1. Latin is the Original Script in your story. For some reason.
People have this habit of forgetting all languages have a SOURCE . In the case of EurAsiAfrica (is that a suitable mix of them?) the source is largely Egyptian Hieroglyphics, which then became Proto Sinaitic, which then became Ancient/Archaic Greek, which then became Latin, which then became English. Basically. So you're saying, by using Latin in your FANTASY WORLD, that Latin is your characters' parent language.... Okay okay okay okay okay. Like you can't just. Drop Latin and not have me thinking about how your world evolved to have That be your parent language in Definitely Not EurAsiAfrica. YOUR FANTASY WORLD IS EARTH!!!!! ITS OKAY IF THEY SPEAK ENGLISH CAUSE THATS HOW WE READ BUT IF WERE GONNA READ A DIFF LANGUAGE YOU MUGHT AS WELL USE SOMETHING FUN LIKE SANSKRIT OR A BANTU LANGUAGE LIKE COME ON
2. At some point there was a major colonisation that took place in your fantasy world to cause the Dominant Language (to name the Important Stuff) to be Latin
THAT YOU ARENT FUCKING ACKNOWLEDGING!!!!!!!!!! You don't have to explain EVERYTHING TO ME but when you introduce like. Everybody speaking The One Language (but having ambiguously Ethnic™ accents) and also everyone speaking some Latin words it can only lead me to believe that if Latin was not just the parent language of the one being spoke that there was some sort of colonisation that happened to influence that!!! People are not culturally homogeneous!!! There will be different speech and eating and habits and LANGUAGE and CULTURE BUT EVERYONE IS SPEAKING AND ACTING THE SAME WHICH CAN ONLY LEAD ME TO BELIEVE THAT THERE WAS A MAJOR COLONISATION OF THE WORLD THAT NOOOOO ONNNNEEEEE IS SPEAKING ABOUT!!!!
