Leak detection is a preventive technique by which the presence of a leak within a system is identified. It measures the unintentional entry or escape of liquids and gases, from pressurized systems or into hollow enclosures that contain some material. There are a few reasons behind leakage. However, leaks are often related to corrosion - to be more specific - it is the final result of corrosion. Due to corrosion, deterioration may occur on any place of a particular system from where contained material escapes. Besides these, excessive pressure of liquids/ gases, operating disturbance and any other issues may be the causes of this problem. Water pipeline leakage is common since the early years/ancient times. But nowadays, chemical leakage/ industrial system leakage is common. Therefore, in this modern era, leak detection has become a necessity in industrial system. Moreover, sensitive components or the equipment with the potential of being damaged by external contaminants or chemical leak is responsible for accidents, environment pollution, and economic loss.
A wide range of detection methods are utilized (Perhaps ‘used’ is more suitable here) depending on the location of the leak, the nature of the fluid in the system and the leak size. The leaks may occur on external or internal surface of a container/system. Moreover, leaks can move from the inside of a component or machine to the outside, or penetrate from the outside to inside, due to difference in pressure between two regions of a double walled tank. A leak detection sensor is perfect if it can detect the dual walled tank leak as it can sense both the internal and external leak. Most of the leak detection sensors mainly determine the location the leak, measure the extent of leakage and keep track of increase or decrease in leakage. Contact technology or non-contact technology can be used in a lead detection sensor, but it is easy to use the non-contact technology-based leak detectors. Because it reduces the risk of any hazardous incident by leaked chemical and comparatively easy operating.
The most common leak detection method for pipeline is known as the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. To convey this method, a series of sensors are installed to track data such as pressure, flow rates, temperature and whether valves are open or closed. At the same time, leak detection sensors can quantify liquid leaks of hazardous chemicals, so it is reliable to minimize considerable damage and loss of liquid by using leak detection sensor.
In a word, leak detection is crucial for reducing accidents, environmental pollution and economic loss. And this task should be done with convenient and proper technology.
