Cello Obtained!
A few days ago I went downtown and picked up my cello rental from Vermont Violins in Burlington. Very nice people. I've been playing around with the cello, and generally making a fool of myself with it. Something I didn't think of is that it's really really loud. Like, floor-shaking-hearable-throughout-building loud. So I have to find a good place to practice. Lessons start this coming Monday, and I'm really excited to begin the process of learning. Something really cool I've been doing is making a playlist on Youtube of cool songs I want to be able to play for fun. Stuff like the opening music to The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, and Hedwig's Theme from Harry Potter. Just to keep me excited to keep learning. I also have made a playlist of other peoples' progression with learning the cello and people who are really good at it, to inspire myself to keep going.
That's it for the first meaningless blog post. Maybe I'll link up my playlists later on, and definitely expect a weekly progression video that I'll post on Wednesdays every week.
Excercise 15 from the Schroeder book!
I finally got it to somewhat work with a metronome!
i'm only just starting cello, but i still love this blog! i can already relate to a lot of the stuff and even though it's funny its also somehow really inspiring to me, so thanks for this blog! ;3 the hardest thing of playing is getting used to bass instead of treble clef @_@ any advice? ;o
Hello, I'm so glad that this blog is inspiring you! Thank you so much :)
My advice: read read read. Sight read. If you have an exercise book, open to a random page and play the first thing you see. The best way to learn anything is to try to do it over and over again, teaching yourself the language.
When I was learning tenor clef a few years ago, I opened my exercise book to random pages around the area where parts were written in tenor and just sightread. I also looked to see the pattern between bass and tenor clef, which is really simple. Now I'm pretty fluent in tenor. With treble, there is definitely a pattern with bass clef. Ignoring octaves, for example, the note "b" in treble is one staff line above the bass clef "b."
I'm currently having the same problem going the opposite way, trying to read treble, and am working on using the same technique as I had with tenor.
The added bonus of this method is that you will become great at sight-reading, if you aren't already! Also, if you're doing exercises, you'll be strengthening all of your cello-related muscles and building good calluses on your fingers, and getting very used to playing the cello.
As with anything, practice makes perfect, so just go for it!
My last piece of advice: do not fear the clef! I've had a quasi-phobia of treble clef for years and it has put me back in becoming more adept at reading in it. Embrace the clef, play it, and learn to love it! You will shine :)
