Learning Vulcan Status Update: Alphabet!
This is more for me than anything I just wanna document my experience learning MGV (Modern Golic Vulcan) to get into the spirit of things
We out here practicing our alphabets (writing/recognizing) like we in Pre-K
Except there’s almost twice as many letters in the Vulcan alphabet than the phonetic (51)! +6 grammatical/punctuation symbols, and 10 digits. But hey! I’m willing to learn!
Turns out the Vulcan alphabet is a lot like a weird combo of Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Mandarin. It reads top to bottom left to right (sentences are vertical instead of horizontal) and the symbols are connected to make words.
Some letters are words though! Or words have letters inside them like Asal (morning)
Asal is “morning” but also capital “A” and that symbol inside it is the regular “a”. The symbol also kind of looks like the sun coming up over the horizon which is cool! Asal (and the symbols or afternoon and night) are also used the same way we’d use a.m. and p.m. to indicate hours of the day. This actually lends itself to a theory of mine that Vulcan days are much longer than ours, they have to divide their days into three time segments instead of two, it also would explain why they can go longer than we can without sleep!
I’m basing what these letters look like in lead pencil handwriting from what they look like in the ancient calligraphic font on the site I’m using since there aren’t a lot of examples for what simplified handwriting looks like so I’m just doing what works (my handwriting has always been a half-cursive swoopy mess anyway) if Korsaya ever updated with handwriting references I’m a-okay with that!
I’m about a sixth of the way through the dozen practice pages I put together for myself! I’ll update again when I’m able to start writing names and English words in Vulcan lettering.

Learning MGV-Update #2
Got to practice my letters a little more yesterday! Forgot to post
I also realized I forgot “Tangu (for Ng)” in my set up so I had to slap it onto the end 😅
Finally starting my vowels!
“Ii” hi key looks like a banana in my opinion lol but what’s WORSE is Itar looks a little... phallic 😂😂😂
Halfway through!
GODS WHAT DOES “shaya-ralash” mean?!?! What does it do?! I mean it literally translates to “sound break” but there are spaces in Vulcan writing and there’s already punctuation for commas, periods, apostrophes and hyphens???
What is SOUND BREAK?!
Maybe it’s an ellipsis? I can’t find anything about it it’s not in the dictionary and the forum guy didn’t get or answer any questions about itttttt.
Idk imma practice it anyway.
Yo seriously once I get like, an above toddler understanding of the language I will translate sentences (especially ST dialogue!) and songs (that I that I know, or if I like upon hearing) into Vulcan upon request!
So cheer me on y’all I look forward to dating in practice through that!
💚🖖🏻💚
P.S. Is it weird that I REALLY wanna cover “Curve of The World” from Jim Henson’s It’s A Big Big World in Vulcan? Those wholesome themes at tight harmonies are 👌🏻
