Things I am learning about my writing
I pick good events for the story and know which characters should give which information in conversation, but I tend to hint at the event and then have a boring conversation after when it would work better to have the conversation in the interesting action and setting.
I tend to rush events, I struggle to draw out scenes and conversations filled with with the setting colored by the character's feelings about it, in part because I pull back too far and there isn't a clear POV. It's kinda just me at my computer saying what happened which is less fun to read than being immersed in the emotion of the characters.
I don't question why my characters do and say things enough, I get stuck in how the story is supposed to move I forget the impact the characters have on it or it on the characters. And then sometimes I do and there are brilliant moments where the character makes sense followed by lots of, "what is this guy doing, why would he do that?"
I am slowly coming to the conclusion that The Shadow of Vale probably isn't one book unless I go Brandon Sanderson style which is a dummy move if I want to publish.
And I am learning that I am making progress. My writing and my understanding of my craft is better than it was when I started two years ago. The third draft will be much better than the first two. My next story will be better than the projects I have going now.
