Trying to Learn or Write Trigedasleng for Fanfic or Fun?

I have no idea who needs to hear this but - There are a lot of resources to learn the language out there. And despite the common thought that the language doesn't have a lot of words, or is not fully thought out, there is actually a very thorough breakdown of how Trigedasleng words are created. It's good to remember that any constructed language (conlang) is going to have a fully fleshed out system for it's linguistic structure or else it'd be near impossible to learn it with any level of accuracy or speak it with others. Here's a couple sources to help you on your way:

As it's a conlang, the most important thing I would say to anyone is have fun and that’ll help you significantly figure out the best way to say what you want. Sometimes that'll be with a word that already exists in the lexicon, or it might be with a word that you create based on the rules of the lexicon.

How do you transition from learning individual words to putting together coherent sentences?

Gah! I spent most of the afternoon writing a big detailed response, and Windows 10 ate it. Whoever’s responsible for that crapware needs a good wamplei kom thauz kodon-ing.

Anyway, the short version is that I learned by copying the canon sentences on the show. I’d look for an existing sentence that had the same grammatical structure and just swap out words.

For instance, suppose I wanted to say “we need to talk.” I’d look for a canon sentence that had “need to {verb}” in it. Ep 206 had one:

ai don sen in chit bilaik ai gaf sen in, “I heard what I needed to hear”.

Then I swap the words out. For “we” I went with yumi, and “talk” without a direct object is chich raun:

yumi gaf chich raun.

And just keep doing that until you get a feel for it.

Unfortunately, the website I used is gone now, and our (Slakgedakru’s) replacement is still a work in progress. But meanwhile David J. Peterson uploaded a transcript of lines from seasons 2 and 3 here. Including some that were cut from the final ep or dropped back to English.

Hey, how would you say "Is it true, that ..?" in Trigedasleng? Would you use "ait" or "rasad" or "taida" or some other word?

Good question! Hmmm… I have to think about this.

Let’s see… definitely not taida, that’s “right” as in “civil rights” or “I have the right to ask”. And rasad is “right” as in the opposite of “left”, it’s descended from “right side”. And so far ait has only been used as an interjection.

I don’t think I’d go for a literal translation. Instead, I’d go with a single clause using “it” as the object and fousen as an adverb. E.g.:

Is it true that you fought ten Reapers?yu fousen gon ten ripa op?

which is more literally “You really fought ten Reapers?”

mochof gon asen-de! I love getting asks about Trigedasleng, especially if they make me figure out how to say something new!

Trigedasleng: Hashta Plurals

Trigedasleng mostly doesn't bother with plurals. Maun can be "mountain" or "mountains, jaka can be "thief" or "thieves", etc.

This can be uncomfortable for us folks used to English. It feels like we're leaving important information out. But we're really not. Most of the time it's pretty obvious from the context. If you're my seken and I tell you to woda ai naifstik klin, you can safely assume I mean for you to clean all my spears, because why would I have you clean just one?

The other reason it's nbd is that we already know how to do this. While most English nouns have separate singular and plural forms, there are a few that don't. "Deer", for instance. You can have one deer or ten deer or a thousand deer, but you never have deers. Not even in that silly Ring sequel.

If you can use "deer" in a sentence, you can handle Trigedasleng's not-plurals. ste wichfou, you!

Occasionally you actually will need to clarify what you mean. There are a few different ways to do this:

You can use demonstratives:

disha trilipa, this deer

nou dei trilipa, not that deer

ou dei trilipa de, or that deer over there.

You can use actual numbers:

bilaik thri trilipa gon klinrona, there are three deer at the river.

woda disha tu naifstik klin, clean these two spears.

ai don frag fai baga op ona dei brol, I killed five foes in that battle.

There are also several quantity adjectives:

bida trilipa: a few deer

bosh trilipa: some deer

loda trilipa: a lot of deer

tona trilipa: a whole lot of deer

ogeda trilipa: all the deer

oda trilipa: too many deer

Finally, there are plural possessives:

ai naifstik: my spear, oma naifstik: all my spears

yu naifstik: your spear, oyu naifstik: all your spears

em naifstik: her spear, om naifstik, all her spears

yo naifstik: y'all's spear, oyo naifstik, all y'all's spears

emo naifstik: their spear, omo naifstik, all their spears (there is no plural possessive for the first person plural)

Unlike English, you still only use these when you need to, not every time.

Trigedasleng in a Nutshell

Most of my friends know by now that I love Trigedasleng, the language created for the TV show The 100. The show is set generations after a nuclear war destroys civilization, and Trig represents what spoken English might evolve into.

sop, gona kom twel kru-de. ('sup, gunner come twelve crew there.) "Hail, warriors of the Twelve Clans."

Grammar is mostly unchanged from English, and the few changes mostly just make things simpler. Articles (a, an, the) have been lost, and so have plurals. All Trig nouns work like "deer" in English. Pronouns have been simplified—just "I" instead of I/me/my etc. E.g. ai naifstik (I knife-stick), "my spear".

fiya hashta yu sich (feel you hashtag you sitch) "Sorry about your problems"

The one real change is the two-part verbs, but even that is just a continued evolution of English phrasal verbs. Compare take up, take out, take in, and take down.

du bilaik yu ste kwelen. ai na frag emo op gon yu. (dude be like you stay quailing. I gonna frag them-all up gone you.) "They think you are weak. I will kill them for you."

There are a few sound changes. The simplification or loss of post-vowel consonants and sometimes whole syllables: fixer → fisa, forever → feva, runner → rona; the vowel shift from "uh" to "aw": cut → kot, much love → mochof, just → jos; the relaxing of some vowels: grind → gran, clean → klin, subway → sobwe. Voiced th has hardened to d: this one → dison, over there → ouder, the fuck → dofo.

hashta soulou gonplei, bilaik won hedon noumou: du souda wan op deyon. (hashtag solo gunplay, be like one head-one (and) no more: dude so gonna wind up (dead) day-one.) "Regarding single combat, there is only one rule: someone must die today."

After that, it's just a matter of learning vocabulary. Some words haven't changed meaning at all beyond sound shifts: hou (home), kefa (careful), mous (most). Some are slang terms gone normal: hashta (about, from "hashtag"), meija (difficult/important, from "major"), kof op (trade, from "cough up"). Some have shifted meaning over time: gon (weapon, from "gun"), sobwe (cavern, from "subway"), sefi (picture, from "selfie"). And some are deliberate euphemisms adopted as a shibboleth: deyon (today, from "day-one"), bushada (coward, from "bush-hider"), gapa (horse, from "galloper").

nou get yu daun, gostos. bilaik yu don tel ai op otaim, ogeda hukop ste ifi. (no get you down, Gustus. Be like you done tell I up all (the) time, all hookups stay iffy.) "Stop worrying, Gustus. Like you've always told me, all alliances are risky."

The resulting words are then spelled phonetically, which makes them LOOK more different than they actually are. Sound a word out and keep the above sound changes in mind, and you can almost always figure out what English word or words a Trig word descends from.

Dison laik feikau, heda. (this-one (is) like (a) fake-out, head-er.) This is a trick, Commander.

ai ste spichen, ai nou drein daun bitam. (I stay speeching, I no drain down bigtime.) “I’m lying, I don’t drink very much.”
