Why I Wish I’d Attended Startup Institute Instead of Grad School
I have a Master’s in Higher Education Management, and I also work at a startup. It may seem a bit incongruous - or at the very least, an unnecessary pre-requisite to work for a startup in the tech world. Although I got value out of my grad school experience, here are a few reasons why I wish I’d pursued a more market-aligned education instead of a traditional one.
The opportunity cost is huge: Don’t get me wrong, graduate school has its merits. During those two years I read an incredible amount, developed my critical thinking skills and spent a ton of time picking apart various theories. But what about the opportunity cost of those 2 years of reading and theorizing?
In grad school you learn how to learn; at SI you learn to do: Thats the biggest difference between my time at Startup Institute and at grad school, actually doing things. In two months at Startup Institute, I built a personal portfolio, learned the tools I needed to become a marketer, built out a network of people in my desired profession, the whole time surrounded by smart, passionate people. I can easily say that I’ve learned, experienced and accomplished more at SI over the last 12 months as both a student and staff member than in double the time at Grad School.
If you know you’re in love with particle physics or molecular biology - great. Go to grad school. Likewise, if you answer true to all of the questions in the graphic above.
But if like most you’re unsure of what you really want to do, there are better places to figure that out - all the while building a network and real skills that are invaluable regardless of your choice of profession.

Ever wonder what it is like to work with a startup?
As part of the core curriculum at Startup Institute, students are paired with selected partner companies in cross-functional teams. In our New York program, Fathom, a travel website, has served as a partner company twice. Fathom is led by co-founders, Pavia Rosati and Jeralyn Gerba.
The group working with Fathom, nicknamed "Team Treehouse", was an all-male team working with an all-female staff. The main project objective was to develop growth hacking strategies as Fathom is trying to reinvent travel websites. This is what Technical Marketing student, Jonathan Carrillo, had to say about his partner project experience:
Pavia enjoyed working with Team Treehouse so much, she wrote a poem entitled Team Treehouse: A Haiku:
let me tell you why
I so love my startup team
These guys amaze
Working alongside a startup is an immersive experience that truly benefits both students and companies. #Learntodo is an important aspect of our curriculum and ethos, helping to ensure our students are great hires with skills and the mindset to succeed at a startup.
Special thanks to Fathom for their partnership!

The Various Forms of the Marketing Conversion Funnel
One of the first lessons on the marketing track at the Startup Institute was how to market like a pirate. AARRR!! Just kidding. By "AARRR" I really mean:
- Acquisition: users come to the site from various channels
- Activation: users enjoy 1st visit: "happy" user experience
- Retention: users come back, visit site multiple times
- Referral: users like product enough to refer others
- Revenue: users conduct some monetization behavior
These are also known as the 5 steps to a successful customer life cycle.
Another way to look at this is with the conversion funnel:
The best way to measure effectiveness is down the funnel, not at the top.
The funnel is not synonymous with the life cycle of a customer; it doesn't account for all aspects of marketing and it isn't the linear definition of media attribution to the purchase process. However, for those looking to understand consumer behavior and how to create programs to address the prospect, the funnel has withstood the test of time for over 100 years.
Something Belle, a handmade accessories venture, is taking The Possible Project by storm. Founders Chardé and Janika are seniors at the Community Charter School of Cambridge who dreamed up their business as a way to bring individuality to their school’s dress code. They produce headbands, hair bows, and bowties in a wide variety of fabrics and sizes for an affordable price. Something Belle is a very customer-service oriented business and will look for fabrics to meet any request. Chardé and Janika believe in giving back to their community and a portion of Something Belle’s sales go to support SASS, a student group that works to empower girls. TPP is so proud of all these two have accomplished- as of February 2013 we know Janika will be attending Hamilton College on a full scholarship through the POSSE Foundation and we are waiting to hear what lucky four-year college will be able to count Chardé as a member of its Class of 2017.
