The Raven (Corvus corax) is the biggest member of the crow family. In the UK ravens breed mainly in the North and West however, their range is spreading Eastwards. Ravens are also found in many different countries although some may be sub species. These charismatic birds are carnivorous and eat carrion, mammals, birds, eggs, insects and other invertebrates. Raven’s have a large wingspan of 100-150cm and make an almost robotic, metallic sound. This large black bird is also classed as one of the most intelligent of all avian and mammalian species being able to solve complex problems. Throughout the world ravens are seen a mythical beings both good and bad depending on the country. The mute swan (Cygnus Olor) is one of the most iconic waterfowl birds worldwide and is known as a graceful and elegant bird. It is found throughout Europe, Asia and North Africa (a rare visitor in winter months). The mute swan is also an introduced species to North America and Australasia, where this graceful bird can be found inhabiting waterways and water bodies. There is very little concern for the mute swan and it is widespread throughout most of its distribution. The hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is one of the most recognisable British mammals. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and can travel up to 2km per night. Their diet consists of worms, slugs, caterpillars and other invertebrates. Hedgehogs are also immune to adder poison allowing them to hunt adders. They are also very good swimmers and hibernate in winter. This species is found in Western Europe, most densely in Britain and I common in parks, farmland and gardens. Hedgehogs were historically seen as vermin but nowadays are more a threat from agricultural practice changes and loss of habitat.
