DAVID WEST .
Wow, If the Heat get taken out by the Pacers
I swear Im gonna laugh so hard.
LeBron James: The guy that could, but won't be.
In the latest episode of the 4th Quarter Phantom Menace, aka LeBron James, the Miami Heat (28-8) went down to the Utah Jazz (17-18) in the closing seconds, with much thanks to LeBron passing up the go-ahead field goal with 4.5 seconds left in regulation. Utah would go on to win 99-98. James finished with 35 points on 16 of 24 shooting (1 of 4 beyond the arc), 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks.
Now I didn't start this to talk about the game on Friday night, but rather, to talk about the player that LeBron James could be, but at this rate can't and ultimately will not be.
"You never make any of the shots you never take. 87% of the shots you do take, you'll miss too."
-Larry Bird
"You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them."
"Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it."
"I never looked at the consequences of missing a big shot... when you think about the consequences you always think of a negative result."
"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying."
-Michael Jordan
The greats were never afraid to fail. Never afraid of failure in the ultimate pursuit of success, of victory. I can name roughly 20 players off the top of my head who this applies to, and LeBron James is not one of them.
I understand the thought behind James’ passing up the shot. Trust your team. One man doesn’t make the team; that is absolutely correct. However, in the game of basketball there are roles. Every single player that suits up that night knows their role on their respective team (exceptions being a player with the hot hand,) but more often than not, this is the case. LeBron James, what is your role on this team? You were brought to Miami in the summer of 2010 to help them win games because you are a phenomenal basketball player.
I’ll say it again; you are a phenomenal basketball player. What makes you think that if your partner in crime, Dwyane Wade is not given the green light, the go-ahead field goal, the “I want YOU to take the f*cking shot,” that you should give the ball to Udonis Haslem? He had 5 field goal attempts all game, including the final shot. REALLY?! When you clearly have the hot hand (8/9 shooting in the 4th quarter) and have scored 17 of your teams 27 fourth quarter points, take the goddamn shot, LeBron.
By the numbers:
In the last two seasons when given the go-ahead field goal in the final 24 seconds of regulation or overtime, here's how the Big Three and the rest of the Miami Heat stack up.
Wade: 3/7 (42.8%)
Bosh: 1/3 (33.3%)
James: 1/9 (11.1%)
Rest of team: 1/10 (10%)
Back to my point. I've said this before, and I'll say it again. LeBron James plain and simply lacks that big "it" factor. Period. This is where the curd separates from the whey, ladies and gents. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Dirk Nowitzki, Paul Pierce, Carmelo Anthony, they all have that "it" factor.
What is this "it" factor? Oh, I'll feed you baby birds. It's the killer instinct, the hunger and desire to win, the absolute hatred of being merely second best, the first place loser, but most importantly the cojones to stare failure straight in the face and snatch victory and glory from the jaws of defeat and shame. You either have "it" or you don't.
LeBron James, you don't have it. So please talking heads around the country and around the world, refrain from comparing LeBron to Jordan and calling him "clutch." The guy not only shies away from the big moment, but falls flat on his face when under pressure. End of story. From here on out, I will no longer bash LeBron for coming up short in big moments, it's expected at this point. I have absolutely zero expectation for him to do anything for his team when the final seconds are ticking down.
All Star Game Reaction
First off, I gotta say, this was one of the best All Star Games in recent memory. Wow! So many dunks and highlights worth mentioning that I can't get through all of em. Kobe passing MJ for most points in the All Star Game, LeBron hitting 3's and bringing his team back (choked at the end), Durant puttin on a show and winning MVP. It was terrific. However I must once again address this issue with Lebrick. He passes to Deron for a 3 and he misses. I don't expect Deron williams to make a clutch shot. LeBron then ends up with the offensive rebound from Howard and turns it over with a STUPID STUPID pass. He had 2 timeouts remaining and could have called it leaving 4 seconds roughly on the clock. Instead, he passes it to the West and the game is over. It's almost sad how much he's failed time and time again. He just proves me right. The kid is not clutch and can't close a game no matter if it's a pickup game or the NBA Finals. Sad. congrats to KD though, Durantula MVP.
Thank you, ESPN. Where's GotEmCoach?
