Lee Wiley!
Lee Wiley (9 October 1908 – 11 December 1975)
A beautiful song with pictures from VE Day, 75 years ago on May 8th, 1945.
Lee Wiley, from Oklahoma runaway to chanteuse extraordinaire. For my money - and ears - the greatest Jazz singer, ever. Men fought over her, including a legendary brawl between the famous aviator Wiley Post and bandleader Victor Young!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
In early 1954, 39-year-old Elaine Lorillard approached 28-year-old George Wein (who had started the Storyville jazz club in Boston in 1950) about organizing a jazz festival in her hometown of Newport, Rhode Island. Elaine and her husband would provide the money, Wein would provide the talent.
For the “first American jazz festival” Wein booked Eddie Condoan, Ella Fitzgerald, Erroll Garner, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday (Holiday would die 5 years later to the day of her performance) , Lee Konitz and Lennie Tristano, Gene Krupa, Modern Jazz Quartet, Gerry Mulligan, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, and Lee Wiley over 2 days on 17-18 July 1954.
Both nights were sell-outs, with more than 13,000 in attendance.
