Had plans to see Never Look Away last night before realizing it has a runtime of 189 minutes. Went with Can You Ever Forgive Me? instead and am the better for it. It’s clever and witty, albeit tragic at times, wonderfully directed, and these two not only earned their nominations but also left me wanting to watch 189 minutes of their relationship. It’s certainly not getting the buzz it should be. If he doesn't get nominated, I may have to do something drastic. The running theme of authenticity is played out brilliantly. The 🤢: There isn't much to the story that isn't already revealed in the trailer. The 🤔: What do Dorothy Parker, Noel Coward, Tallulah Bankhead, or Lillian Hellman have in common? They are all distinguished writers heavily referenced in the movie that I have embarrassingly never heard of. WIG REVIEW: CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?

This weekend brought about the triumphant return (for me at least) of: SEEING MOVIES WITH MOVIEPASS! HALLELUJ! This is absolutely still a Titanic situation and who knows how long it will last but for now: I am very happy to see movies using it while I still can. Especially great movies like this one. But what about the wigs? Let’s discuss.

I have been a huge fan of Melissa McCarthy ever since her Sookie St. James days on Gilmore Girls an honestly, she has never been better as Lee Israel, a grumpy, dumpy, down-on-her luck writer who is peak New York curmudgeon. Lee Israel was a real biography writer who turned to forging literary documents to keep her crazy cat lady life afloat.

As a crazy cat lady myself, I loved every scene with her cat and McCarthy has even said that this cat is Oscar-worthy and I AGREE. This movie is really about being such a crazy cat lady that you get yourself into a life of crime simply to pay for your cat to go to the vet. SHE HAD TO FORGE THOSE LETTERS! THINK OF THE KITTY!

McCarthy is also Oscar worthy herself. She has never been afraid to deglam for a part and this part is apex DEGLAM. The whole movie is set in depressing 1991 NYC and if it could be a color, it would be: dirty beige. Also omg I miss 1990s New York when you could pay for a nice upper west side apartment simply by writing a few fake Dorothy Parker letters. THOSE WERE THE DAYS.

McCarthy, like me, is also a lover of wigs and usually wears at least one in her films. Here she only gets one and WOOF WHAT A WIG. And I mean that in the best possible way. This wig is supposed to belong to a woman whose apartment is so disgusting that an exterminator won’t even go inside because it smells so bad. A woman who steals shrimp from a party and puts it in her bag to eat with her cat later. A woman who gets read for filth about her “fashion” every day. A woman who ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HER HAIR. And that is exactly what this wig shows.

It is choppy and blunt and ugly and perfectly frumpy. The seamwork and texture are good and the bent lack of continuity is right on.

I especially appreciated the fact that it perpetually looked like she needed to redye her roots. This is method wig acting at its finest. In every scene, this wig looks correctly disheveled. 

Less believable is that this character was somehow able to drink highballs in a book store (even if she brought the glass and booze - where did she get the ice?!?!) but I believed her wig the entire way through.

Oh and Richard E. Grant as her equally curmudgeonly gay bff is honestly just the best. No one can wear a dirty ascot paired with a bolero tie like this guy and there’s no one I’d rather eat a Zabar’s baguette at midnight on the street with. 

In the end, this is a really depressing movie about failure and fame and friendship and cats and alcoholism and not so accidentally becoming a felon and the high cost of impersonating other people. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. IT IS WONDERFUL.
