Hissed with a harshness much unlike the tiny, innocent, and soft spoken boy she'd grown up alongside. She should know, from experience, that hardships and abuse CHANGE a person for the worst, and no longer is their bond the picture of soft PURITY as it had once been. The scorches upon his backside BURN with a ferocity that bested even his ire, and he would be hard-pressed to allow HER, of all people, to see him like this.

They rode out to town on the King's suggestion, to show themselves together for the people of Hyrule, give them hope for the future in the young hands of the Princess and her Betrothed. Suggestion became demand and Link soon found himself astride Epona, trotting lightly alongside Zelda and her horse, as they made their way through the town.

It was exhausting, keeping up appearances, when he was so tired.

As they completed their circuit around town, moving out of sight of the residents, instead of heading back to the castle stables, Link brought Epona to a halt and sighed heavily, dropping his shoulders and leaning back, one hand on Epona's rump as he looked over to Zelda.

"I'm going home to Labrynna," he told her, voice and expression tired, but more than that, defeated and barely masked sorrow. "You win."

Finding the inn was the easy part. Even if Link didn't tend to stay in the small settlements dotting the country, he at least knew where they were, and after leading Epona out of the forest, Zelda on her back, he made short business of getting to the inn. Actually getting a place to stay inside the inn had been a bit trickier.

Link didn't miss the stares leveled in his direction as he passed through the town and into the inn itself. Opting to leave Zelda on Epona for the moment, he met a rather stoic innkeeper inside who asked questions with his eyebrows alone, the pair of them bouncing above his hazel eyes when first Link asked for a room and then when he clarified that he wanted separate sleeping quarters as well. It took a couple more bounces of his eyebrow and a couple more rupees from Link's purse, but eventually he secured the requested rooms, going back outside to finally bring Zelda in.

Catching the bouncing eyebrows a final time, Link left a small pile of rupees on the counter for an extra bit of quiet and to keep the eyebrows from jumping off the man's face.

Zelda settled in front of the fire, towel found to drape over her shoulders, Link busied himself with stoking the fire, the heat flooding the room not long after. And all that time, critical eyes did not leave Zelda's face. She shivered still, which was a good sign. It was when the shivering stopped that it was time to get worried, but even so, Zelda didn't look good. He had to figure out a way to get her clothes dry, but how? With all the layers and nonsense of the dress, that would take forever.

Tilting his head as Zelda began to sign, he waited patiently for her to complete the thought, nodding as the idea completed itself. That was sound enough. He thought he had an extra tunic in his pack, giving Zelda's hand a reassuring squeeze before he went to check.

Returning a moment later, blue eyes worried, he presented her with the tunic. Pointing at Zelda, his left pointer finger crooked forward before pulling back. His left hand then curled into a fist, thumb sticking out, and settled on his right flat palm, before he lifted both hands into the air. << Do you need help? >>

     How does the saying go again? Better late than never?

     As Link watches Zelda press the cooled jar to her eye, he presses the thought to his anger: a simmering, swelling thing in the curl of his fists and the set of his jaw. He'd arrived at the tailend of— this. Whatever this is, whatever she was doing here, ears catching all the mockery but hands too far from the fist that dealt the felling blow. It isn't her first time here from what he gathers — isn't her first loss here — but any hurts to his friends have always stung worse than his own; even if it seems she sought these out herself.

     ...Maybe especially when it seems she sought these out herself.

     The tide recedes, momentarily, at her words. His fingers unwind. His shoulders slowly loosen. He moves to crouch beside her, back to the wall, head shaking with a noise of it's fine. She doesn't need to thank him for something like that.

     "'This'," he repeats, voice fading into the faint bustle of the brighter streets. The quiet holds for a moment, stretched like the band of a slingshot drawn to the fullest, before it snaps with the breath that leaves him in an audible not-quite-sigh. He looks at her— keeps looking at her. His gaze hasn't really strayed from that big bruise, now covered, or the tiny patches of scraped skin, or the reddened contours of her face.

     Concern has his brow puckered, his lips pursed. The questions on his tongue melt away for another time — save for one.

     "Where's— where...else...s'it hurt?"

the sweet treats were always welcomed , feeling grateful that the princess herself would bother at all giving him something , as he had never quite experienced such kindness until meeting her . he gives it a try eating one of the chocolates and he's humming in approval , a subtle smile showing on his face .

the dragon knight gives a gentle nod towards zelda before bringing her hand to his lips , delicate as he pressed a kiss to the back of it . " thank you , my princess . . . " he's certain she was more than used to that title , but he decided to make it a bit more personal when adding that possessiveness to it - in a harmless way , of course .

Nabooru wasn't sure if she could rightfully say she liked Zelda. She did, of course, in a certain manner of speaking, appreciate the girl's quick wit and clear intelligence, and she was fond of the kind of mischief children that age had. On the other hand, she was the next heir of a frequently hostile nation, and it was hard to see past that too far. Still, it was better for her to keep her safe at the very least.

"Princess, I don't know if the gossip I know about him would even make sense to you. We spend maybe a month of the year in the same country together, let alone-"

Her ears pricked up, eyes narrowing as she glanced further ahead.

"Hold up."

She was a nightmare with bow and arrow, but it was better than a spear in this situation. She unholstered the bow from her hip, and went for an arrow.

"If anything with a brain is out there, you should say so now before you lose it."

"Hang on..." She waved a now green blood-stained hand at Sheik, continuing her grisly work. Unfortunately, with monsters, what was on their insides was often significantly more precious than their outside. In this particular instance, she was able to salvage the beast's entrails and heart. Key components in Gerudo healing salve, something she was running dangerously low on.

"If you want something to eat, I suggest you start digging." She stood after wiping her hands down with sand. "Out this far, the only thing we're going to find are beetles." Not her favorite meal, but not one she'd turn up her nose at either.

He wanted to just tell her, to her face, that he loved her. Goddesses above, why was this so difficult to say? Despite being the princess, she was much more than that. Much, much more. They had shared so much together and, well, it was something he wanted to address. He wanted, more than anything, to just embrace her. To just pull her into a hug and everything to go from there. A hug was all he dared to do, dared dream of doing. The way he felt was one sided, that he was painfully aware of.

Considering all of the trials he’d faced; this was worse than all of them combined. He tried, desperately, to put to words what he was feeling, what he was thinking. Words were, however, were failing him. It was rapidly coming to the point that was going to have to force words out, rather than construct some eloquent statement or declaration.

“I’d…” He started, trying to force himself to say something, anything. “I’d… Want to be… b-by your side… A-and… W-with you for… uhh… for… y’know…umm…” Bless him, he was rapidly turning redder than the Goron Tunic.
