I was talking to a friend about the Washington State Legislature, and I was mistaken about how they structured their districts. Which is a shame because the way I thought it was seemed like a good idea.

Idea: Overlapping single-member districts, in a single house.

Each person is represented by two (or more) senators, but the two senators don't share the same geographic area. Essentially, the districting process is done such that no representative has more than a 50% population overlap.

This tends to diffuse gerrymandering and make it so there are different groups of interest in different directions. So my hometown, which is a growing city that's also a hub for agriculture, might have one representative who is concerned for the farming communities out west, and another is concerned with the urban areas to the south.
