Review: 60240 City Kayak Adventure

Price: $13.99 CAD

Build Time: Appx. 10-15 minutes (depending on the stickers!)

Design: The 4x4 truck looks good but is not really what grabs your attention here. While it has a good colour scheme and some nice features for the scale (I especially like the pieces suggesting mirrors), what’s more attractive about the set is the selection of accessories. Between the truck, kayak, camera, and frog, there is great potential for play experience. Overall, the set is not likely to pop off the shelf, but the fun you can have with this very ‘functional’ model shouldn’t be overlooked.

Play Experience: I think this is a great set to play with, both indoors and outdoors. It really has everything you need to have a little adventure, driving out to the water, kayaking around, and taking pictures of things. I like the sets with cameras as they encourage you to use a real camera with them, taking real pictures of the set and things the LEGO adventurer might photograph in the environment. The kayak can be stuck to the minifig’s head so that he can carry it to the water, and I have no doubt that the frog will inevitably end up stuck to his head, too!

Level of Difficulty: This is a smooth, easy, and satisfying build. The only challenge here is getting the six stickers to align perfectly. Do your best with the long, thin ones, but accept that you might have to settle for ‘good enough’ sometimes!

Value for money: There are some great pieces included with this set (the frog, the kayak, the camera, etc.), which I assume are bumping the cost up just a little bit higher than I would expect. The minifig is functional but nothing highly desirable. I wouldn’t want to pay more than $12.99 for this since there are other great sets competing at that price level, but I found mine for $10.05 and I’m very happy with it for that price.

Toy Story 4 is out today and LEGO has a bunch of sets ready for junior (4+) builders. If your kids love the movie and you’re in Canada, Toys R Us has these sets on sale right now. In my personal, honest opinion, I think Toy Story is a great movie series and obviously LEGO is great, but they do not suit each other very well. I’d hold out for the more generic juniors sets or just regular sets that will continue to appeal long after your kids have forgotten about Buzz and Woody.
