E is for Egypt 🇪🇬 Alexandria, 1990. . . . As a kid, I really only wanted two things - to be a photographer and to travel. When I was 16, two mentors separately suggested that taking a contract as a cruise ship photographer for six months would be good for me. It made sense - photography, travel, darkroom work and dealing with people (it’s fair to say I had a tendency to be introverted). So, when I was old enough I applied and got a job working out of Port Canaveral, Florida and Miami. First career goal achieved ✅. . . . Golden beaches and azure seas were fabulous: what’s not to like? It paid big $$’s too. But photographically it got a bit repetitive so, after a year I left that contract to join the Cunard Princess sailing the Med and the Black Sea between Venice and Piraeus (Athens); two weeks out and two weeks back. I got to see amazing, historic destinations and cities I’d only dreamed of. We visited Alexandria a couple of times that summer. I’ll never forget the stench or the intense chocolate brown colour of the water in the port 🤢. It was even worse than Venice! Aged 20, and with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis as my photographic references, I wanted to shoot street documentary. For eight weeks, the unsuspecting inhabitants of Alexandria and the Greek Islands were my guinea-pigs and the various ports of the Mediterranean my training ground. On the ship I learned how to be a commercial, social, corporate, portrait photographer but when we got to land I taught myself how to be a photo-journalist. It was the best of both worlds and, so far, has worked out pretty well for me. I hope I can get out there and use some of those skills again soon 🙏🏻 . . . BTW, These photos have never been shared digitally, only hand printed. I had to dig out the scanner from storage where it’s been for more than ten years. Thankfully, it worked first time. . . . #Alexandria #Egypt #LeicaR5 #documentaryphotography #photojournalism #documentaryphotographer #storiesfromtheroad #onassignment #photographer #photography #travelphotography #travelphotographer #travel #reportage #beautiful #adventure #wonderlust #wanderlust #exploremore #talktostrangers (at Alexandria - الإسكندرية) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Pz79qFEKl/?igshid=vhjhb0wg7ns4
