Leichhardt Post Office (1888). The grandest operating Post Office in the Inner   West, complete with Venetian-style bell tower. Still trades as a Post Office out the back, but the front of the building has been leased as lawyer's offices. Heritage listed. Leichhardt.

The area is named after the German explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, who spent six years travelling in unexplored northern Australia before his party of seven disappeared without trace near the Great Sandy Desert while attempting the first East-West crossing of the continent in 1848. He was 34.

Sear your appetite into a heart-warming Italian meal with an Australian twist along the Italian strip in Sydney, Norton St Leichhardt. Ideal for a date night or small group catch-ups, the cosy and intimate setting is made even warmer with the friendly and helpful waitstaff. Start with house made focaccia which was incredible - I’ve never tasted such soft yet crunchy focaccia - no joke, it crumbled into my mouth. Continue with the ocean trout carpaccio; it’s freshness complimented the bread perfectly. Spread a dollop of creamy chicken liver pate onto accompanying crisp bread. 

Twirl into your choice of signature pastas presented in ideal portions, including the saffron fettuccine. Cooked al dente, the pasta was a little tougher in texture but worked really well with the tenderness of the lamb. This was my preferred selection as the flavours and textures were so well balanced. Mash into the beef gnocchi drowned in a tomato base sauce. Finally, sweeten your taste buds with a dessert, the dark chocolate cannoli was the perfect size and not too rich (it was great considering that I was pretty stuffed from the dinner already). Refresh your palate with a scoop of sorbet too - the pear and honeycomb was perfecto.
