layla pulls a face. whatever she was made to drink, it certainly wasn't very appetising. the glass was adorned too look like a cauldron, containing the green drink she'd be convinced into tasting. "is this... slime? jesus christ..." she pushes the glass over towards lemie, shaking an open palm to imply that was enough for her. "what did you just make me drink?"

it was like circling a carpark for a spot, pacing around the sitting area waiting for a table to free up. connie's legs were killing her, taking an excuse to get out of the house and move her feet a little too far, now all she wanted to do was sit down. perching her hands on her hips, the lawyer lifts up onto her toes to survey the crowd, the concept of rest slowly slipping away. "damn tourists..." she mutters, not realising she was in earshot of another.

"How does this whole working situation work after you're married?" X asks, meaning the B&B they were currently drinking coffee in. He was no stranger to the idea of working with a spouse these days, it didn't stop his curiosity for what that would look like for the pair of them, "Will the guests have to starve if he pisses you off and you need to go take the day? That'll fuck with the Yelp score."

It only dawns on him at that thought that he should he consulted with his own other half before he left that morning to find out whether or not she had told Lemie about the newest development in their lives.

In an attempt at casual, he holds his coffee cup on the arm of the chair he was on and tries to act like there was no grander reason for his next question.

"Have you been hanging with Van at all... Lately?"

"So," Lucky says after five minutes discussing his daughter and the school year, obligatory small talk out of the way with the Mabel-shaped elephant in the room lingering with as much ominousness as their mother did when they found themselves in an actual room with her, "Are you ever going to tell me what actually went down with you and mom? Because she's being as cagey as ever about it."

In typical Lucky style, he sugarcoats the truth from his older sister, trying as always to play some kind of peacekeeper.

( There was nothing cagey about all the ways Mabel had insisted that Lemie had chosen to overreact to a simple conversation. )

“There you fucking are,” X says as he finally locates Lemie in the packed club. He was sure he had caught a glimpse of her a half hour earlier, but she had vanished among the rest of the blondes in attendance while he had been clocked by a four-strong gaggle of college girls who had realised who he was.

His first search when he escaped them had been for Van, but he switched course to ensure he didn’t miss Lemie again.

“Congratulations. I was going to text but I thought that’s fucking lame.”
