OVERVIEW.

xavier grew up in what he thought was a stable home in houston, texas. that was until shortly after his fourteenth birthday his mother addie came out as a lesbian in her forties which effectively ended her marriage to his father, darren. his father’s departure from the home and his parents subsequent divorce weighed heavily on him, and kickstarted a five year long spiral that culminated in a cocaine overdose at the age of 19.

what followed was his first rehab stint, and a six month period of consecutive sobriety which ended in a weekend in LA that he still can’t recall the full details of.

most of his 20′s was spent falling on and off the wagon, but he’s been sober since his 30th birthday and is determined to make it stick this time.

regular attendee of AA meetings, but isn’t the most forthcoming about that. or anything.

he started playing guitar after his father bought him one for his 10th birthday, and it remains the one consistent hobby he keeps that doesn’t double as a vice.

worked a variety of jobs over his tenure in aurora bay, mostly service industry. bartending was his longest stint.

"My dad taught me how to use a gun when I was young. I know that sounds like negligent parenting but that's just Texas.

"I've got my dad's dog tags on me most days. It makes me feel close to him to wear them, closer than we were when he was alive, if you can believe it.

She's briefly grateful that she can handle things in moderation -- she could survive being sober, maybe, but everything would be far less fun.

"Mild," Duke laughs under her breath as she takes a hit, blowing the smoke upwards so that X didn't get caught in the crosshairs of a contact high.

She was sure X would equate anything short of being strapped off in a straitjacket and locked away from Vanessa for an eternity to be a 'mild' option.

"Well, give her some grace she's like, what, fucking twenty-three or something? How smart were you at twenty-three? Answer quick, you don't want me answering for you -- Youtube exists and we can pull up some clips."

X doesn't answer Duke immediately, take a second to check with himself whether or not he could. He had been so militant at the start of his sobriety journey that he had cut out anything and everything that fell under the substance umbrella, even those he personally considered on the lower end of that spectrum.

A joint wouldn't kill him and most likely wouldn't send him hurtling back to active addiction but it had a high chance of doing something much, much worse.

( Causing his wife to make that face she made when she wanted to silently convey that she didn't like what he was doing. )

"Nope. But that one's a choice, weed's never done shit for me."

Picking up a cocaine habit in his teens had made sure of that.

He fans away the stray wisps of smoke that tried to drift his way, banishing away any thought of himself at Daisy's age too so Duke didn't follow through on showing him footage that his blackouts had blessed him with forgetting.

"I was a fucking moron at twenty-three which just adds to my point. You don't go all in with the twenty three year old. You fuck 'em and hope that doesn't end up fucking you over."

Van fixes a scowl on her husband for a moment when she thinsk he's blindly praising her, a smile quickly correcting on her features as he gives her helpful criticism.

She wasn't a sensitive artist by any means -- she liked pushing herself towards improvement.

And if she was going to try to be solo, she had to be able to shoulder the task of not shifting the blame to anyone else.

"It doesn't," she admits into the mic with a scrunch of her nose, rubbing a finger over the bridge of it.

X could recognise the look on Van's face from a mile away let alone from his side of the soundproof glass between them.

If she got too far in her own head it wouldn't matter what tweaks they made to the song. Even if it was perfect, it wouldn't be able to cut through the noise of whatever else was looping through her mind.

"Come out here a second and take five with me," He requests, lifting his finger off the talkback button and pushing back the chair he was on as he removes the headphones he had had been wearing and places them down on the desk.
