Aziraphale seems like the kind of person who would have played Lemmings obsessively when it came out.
What If
Somewhere in the back of his mind, he was fascinated with how it looked as though his sketches had come to life. Curves and planes became toned muscle and skin. What had seemed to be random lines on paper became barely-seen scars. And that lower lip, just visible through his dark beard, looked as impossibly soft as it did in his sketches. If he were close enough to see the dwarf’s eyes, Ori was positive they would be blue. His soulmate was here. Not just in Ered Luin, but standing tens of feet away from him. Ori wasn’t sure if he was going to laugh out loud at the irony or throw up at the feeling that he was not prepared for this. His body seemed to be making the decision for him by freezing in place, his heart hammering loud enough that it felt like it was echoing in his ears. The dwarf stared at him with dark, penetrating eyes for a long moment before reaching down and grabbing the axe that he had dropped.
—And as he watched, the dwarf shouted a halt in a hoarse voice that sounded like he’d been shouting for hours.Ori’s feet were glued to the earthen floor as the recruits melted away, drifting away from the center ring, with Fili and Kili staring after the dwarf in shocked amazement. The dwarf who was now walking towards him, both axes still in his hands as he approached.Ori couldn’t move. A part of his mind that wasn’t dumbstruck with a growing sense of panic was watching his arms, the sway of the axes, the way his feet stepped with purpose. When the dwarf stopped in front of him, Ori had to stop himself from swallowing audibly."Dwalin," the dwarf said, his voice warmer than before. He bent down in a bow, but his gaze — with beautiful, blue eyes like a morning sky — never wavering from Ori’s. "At your service."Ori’s mind was a blank before he remembered his manners. “Ori,” he managed through a dry throat. “At yours.”
So just what is Nori doing while away from Ered Luin in Indelible?
"Shit, shit, shit," Nori cursed, jamming his finger into his mouth and sucking at the small burn until it went from ‘owowowowow’ to something more bearable. He was still getting used to being out in the wilderness — with his reputation in Ered Luin, the nearby settlements weren’t places that he wanted to risk, and he didn’t want to leave the Blue Mountains with Dori and Ori still there. So, that left poaching. And when night fell, that meant campfires.A few times, he’d been lucky to come across travelers who didn’t mind sharing their fire for the night, but those were few and far between. Even if there had been more, Nori would’ve had to keep to himself anyway, or else risk word getting back to Kollr of a dwarf matching Nori’s description scraping out an existence in the wilderness.(Sorry it’s so short. *grovel*)
Before the beginning
Nori raised an eyebrow, staring down at the long, wickedly curved knife inches away from the tip of his nose. “Captain Dwalin,” he said breezily, throwing in a smirk for good measure. “I didn’t know you cared. Though, downgrading from Grasper to a knife? People might talk.”Dwalin was unimpressed, to say the least. “You’re the one who called me here. Talk.”Nori sighed heavily, casting his gaze heavenwards while holding up his hands as if to ask Mahal why he had to deal with such unimaginative dwarves. “It appears, my good Captain, that I might be going out of town for a while, and I need a good pair of eyes to keep something safe for me.”Dwalin did some eyerolling of his own. “You do realize that if I were to aid and abet a crime, I’d be an accomplice, don’t you.”"Before, after, during," Nori said lovingly, using his smile to full effect. "As you’ve bored me to tears so often, Captain.""And you’re still asking," Dwalin said flatly. The knife didn’t waver."But of course," Nori said, his tone breezy. His eyes were another matter. "If there was anyone else I could trust with this, I would’ve asked them, but we have a certain amount of… trust."Dwalin shrugged. “I trust you to commit crimes—”"—And I trust you to be two steps behind me," Nori finished, his smile slipping into something close to fondness. "Well, the good news is, I’ll be out of your hair soon." He eyed Dwalin’s head critically. "What little you have left, of course."Dwalin snorted, not rising to the bait. “And this coming from the dwarf who swore I’d never chase him out of Ered Luin?”"You’re not the one doing it," Nori pointed out. "Which brings me to a certain something I want kept safe.""You’re not stupid enough to ask me to watch over stolen goods," Dwalin scoffed. "What is it?"Nori stared at him for a long moment before he inhaled slowly and nodded to himself. “A certain address, and the two who live there.”Dwalin scowled. “Where?” When Nori told him, he rolled his eyes. “That’s not one of your usual haunts.”Nori shrugged, trying not to let on how much that might have hurt. “No, but it’s important to me.”"Important enough to ask the captain who’s been chasing you for years to watch over it for you," Dwalin said slowly, his eyes narrowing. "Important enough that the enemy is more trustworthy than any of your… business associates."Nori stared into Dwalin’s blue eyes.Dwalin frowned. “Who are they to you?”"Are you saying you’ll watch them, Captain?" Nori asked.Dwalin’s frown grew more suspicious. “Who. Are. They.”Nori only stared, watching as the captain put two and two together and got two dwarves who Nori cared about to entrust them with the only honorable dwarf he knew in Ered Luin."I can’t protect them forever," Dwalin said firmly. "You’re going to have to come back at some point to look after them yourself."Nori only smiled.
