Wave Machines & Drum Machines.
Many folks believe that wave machines, like drum machines, DONT HAVE NO SOUL! Growing up as a drummer, I had developed an instinctive hostility towards the use of drum machines in music, viewing them as cheap imitations and a "cop out" of sorts. The same thought could be applied to wave machines as well. Does that mean wave machines DONT HAVE NO SOUL?
I used to be a neo-Luddite elitest douchebag. But I've realized that there's definitely another way to look at it...
It's not the wave machine that creates the stoke, and it's not the drum machine that creates the music. BABY IT'S THE PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME THAT BRING THE SOUL TO THE TABLE!
The Wave machine pictured above is located in Mission Beach, San Diego. A couple times a year, this machine serves as the "womping-ground" for one of the coolest bodysurfing events in the world. "Str8 Outta Wompton" summons riders and fanatics from all around the globe, bringing together a mob of the most ridiculous and coolest cats in the surfing community. Sure the fake wave is a blast to ride, but the overall sense of stoke comes from the people.
Lemme ask you a question... What has more soul than a community of people who slide down water in skimpy hydrodynamic underwear? AINT NOTHIN HAS MORE SOUL THAN SKIMPY HYDRODYNAMIC UNDERWEAR.
All in all, let's not get caught up in our own bullshit sense of elitism, whether it be in the water, or at a rock n roll show. EMBRACE THE SOUL IN ALL FORMS.

note: Go pick up the album "No Wow" by The Kills. Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince use a drum machine on this record. Hands down one of the best albums produced in the last decade.
Public Service Announcement from LenStank: reminding you to both Rock and Roll.
