he stared down at his hands, the breath knocked out of his lungs.
'i'm pregnant, leo.'
they were supposed to be studying for their exams, up in the library along with the rest of the school. instead, anya had suggested they sit out by the lake and study instead, enjoying the fresh warm air.
their books were long forgotten, though, and the air didn't feel so warm after she'd spoken those words aloud.
"leo, say something. please."
the strain in her voice was enough to make him raise his gaze to hers slowly, and it was the tears he could see in her eyes that made him reach out to pull her into his arms.
"i don't know what to say," he whispered into her hair, his mind racing furiously. having babies was supposed to be exciting, but not when you were still wrapping up your seventh year and still had exams to worry about. not when you were only seventeen and unmarried and when your father had told you that you weren't allowed to see your own girlfriend.
leo heard her sniffle against his robes and he stroked a hand gently over her hair, knowing that he had to say something.
"we'll be done with school next month. we can... i have savings, we can rent a flat, or even buy a place, i don't know, i... we'll..."
she pulled away from him, her cheeks stained with tears but her eyes angry. "leo, this is a baby. you're off to law school, do you think you can take care of a baby and do that all at once?"
leo stared at her with wide, confused eyes, shaking his head. "i mean... anya, we can figure it out..."
"and what about me? what am i supposed to do? i'm going to be huge. my dad and uncle will kill me." anya's chest was heaving with sobs, and she pushed away leo when he tried to pull her back into his arms.
"you don't want to keep it?" leo asked, his voice strained with the words heavy on his tongue. they were young and stupid and naive, but there was nothing that he wanted more than this, to be with anya and to have children with her, even if it was earlier than either of them had ever wanted.
she wiped at her cheeks with shaky hands, her breath hitching in her throat. "i'm not saying that, i just... this isn't an easy decision."
he licked his lips, looking away from her and off at the glittering surface of the lake instead. they sat in silence for a while, neither of them speaking or even looking at the other.
leo broke the silence first, resting a cautious hand on top of anya's. "i want this, but only if you do too."
she met his gaze, uncertainty written over her features. "i'm scared, leo."
"i love you, anya. and i... i want to spend my whole life with you and i'd do anything to make that happen. and if we have this baby... i'd do anything to take care of both of you."
a tearful smile tugged at her lips hesitantly, her hand squeezing his. "you think we can do this?"
leo nodded his head slowly, his free hand reaching out to tuck her hair behind her ear. "yeah."
"i want to think about it a little more, okay?"
his head nodded again, pressing his lips gently against her forehead "okay. of course."
she buried her head against his chest, and leo leaned back onto the willow tree, arms wrapped tightly around her.
as they sat there in silence again, he tried his best not to think about the letter from his father, buried deep in his trunk where it'd been since he'd received it two weeks before. his father could give him all of the warnings he wanted about her family, but all leo cared about now was the family that he and anya could build together.
