ESPERANZA SPALDING AND LEO GENOVESE - BOTH SIDES NOW
At the 2025 Polar Music Prize ceremony on May 27, 2025, Esperanza Spalding and Leo Genovese performed a heartfelt rendition of Joni Mitchell’s "Both Sides Now".
Performance Details
Purpose: The performance was a tribute to the legendary jazz musician Herbie Hancock, who was one of the three laureates honored at the event alongside rock band Queen and soprano/conductor Barbara Hannigan.
The Artists: Spalding, a five-time Grammy-winning bassist and singer, was accompanied by the Argentinian pianist Leo Genovese.
Song Choice: They performed "Both Sides Now," originally by Joni Mitchell, a long-time collaborator of Hancock.
Venue: The ceremony took place at the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm, Sweden, and was attended by the Swedish Royal Family.

In addition to this performance, esperanza spalding also collaborated with Robert Glasper during the ceremony to perform Hancock’s classics "Trust Me" and "Watermelon Man".
