Cas - Leon Best

This has been my tune for months. The reason for the title should be apparentby the end of the hook.

Whilst it may seem that Cas (or Castro Saint as he was formerly known) is simply another cliched artist, to my mind he separates himself from the rest of the field not only by the fact that he rarely deviates from his subject matter - almost exclusively substance abuse, but also his "candid" approach of the issue. At odds to the commonly heard mantra of "never get high on your own supplies" Cas freely "admits" to indulging in his own wares but does so using metaphors of a much higher standard than the majority of grime I'm exposed to these days.

Another apparent trademark of Cas is his Army of Two style mask. Anonymity breeds interest and he has certainly gained this judging by his twitter following and video views.

In addition to this, the Video is of a standard rarely produced by artists with no commercial releases or label support. It would be an impressive video if it was released by a signed UK artist in any genre.

Chemist on BBK Edition 3: Derkhead was my first taste of Cas' gritty style. As his return to the scene came unannounced there was no expectation that he would be releasing any content, let alone content of this quality following his 5 year hiatus.

Whilst a lot of the conten in "Urban Genre" scenes in the UK seemingly becoming more and more homogenous and lacking in distinguishing features compared to their transatlantic analogues, Cas' music is at no risk of falling into this category as his music and videos have a very unique and British feel about it.

The key question I use to judge whether an artist is good or not is - Am I not entertained? Being of an age and level of maturity now where I'm not worried about whether an artist is "real" or not, I can safely say I find Cas to be an entertaining artist. I'm impressed.
