It's almost a decade later. Ashley's phone rings, a familiar number, on the other end Leon holds his phone to a speaker ready to press play. The chorus of Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball begins to blast into the mouthpiece.
Ashley didn't expect, anticipate a long-lasting communication. Hers was a chapter many skipped, save for the desperate few in need of a headline—and she was fine with that. Leon, Luis more than anyone deserved an existence without the reminder of what happened there, Ashley swept along into that dustpan of a disaster. So, when continued contact remained, it felt...
Reassuring in a selfish way. Without the pressure of hero weighing on Leon's head, they could talk like normal late twenties, early thirties did, complain about a bad movie, commentate on each other's bad choices, meet up for bad food. It was normal, and it was ridiculous, and it was good. It wasn't continual, it wasn't weekly, but Ashley knew well their statuses, and they knew hers.
So, while a call wasn't expected, it wasn't too out of nowhere - no panic needed to ensue, no worries to be had. When Ashley picks up, she expects Luis to plead with her, to join his side against Leon's evil reign, for Leon to chew loudly into the phone, or for - not so rarely - a charged conversation regarding how... unfair it all was.
Somehow, she expects everything but Miley Cyrus.
French-tipped nails click in the background, steepling against her countertop. Her tea whistles.
"Is this your way of announcing you're changing my ringtone, Gag Queen?"
It's sweet, ultimately. Ashley's smile is unseen.
"That still ruled, by the way. Who would've thought your day would be saved by a twenty year old wielding a wrecking ball?"
Sure, their ways of saving each other are less theatrical now, but even with this one call--
They're still saving each other in their own ways.
"By the way, I need a new contact photo for you. Please, not another Facebook Dad selfie. I know you can pull off something other than... that. Ask Luis?"
