It lives in Ecuador and Peru, near the confluence of the Amazon River and the Napo River. They are ranked at Least Concern by the IUCN and not in danger of population decline.

It lives in Brazil in the area near the Inauini River and was formerly considered to be a subspecies of the brown-mantled tamarin, L. fuscicollis.
