Anne is putting her coat on when the front door opens and Grantaire comes in, loud as always, cheerfully yelling "Honey I'm home!" before realizing both Enjolras and Anne are standing right there. R, of course, doesn't miss a beat, grasps at his shirt and lays against their cupboard's door to whisper: "...Betrayal..."
Enjolras rolls his eyes at him but Anne flushes slightly, which is rather odd considering she's definitely met Grantaire before, at Le Musain, and that's where he likes to be at his most ridiculous, oftentimes encouraged (and joined) by Joly and Bossuet. It does become a bit clearer when she says:
"Hi Grantaire. I'm.. Sorry, I didn't know you two were... together."
There's something in her voice that makes Enjolras straightens up and Grantaire grinning wildly at her: "Oh we're not," he says. "It's more of a coakroach situation really-" (Enjolras stares at him. His grins softens.) "Wait, no, that's mean, my therapist said I shouldn't do that anymore -- i'm more like a rescued dog, I suppose--"
This time, Enjolras glares and Anne, poor Anne, looks between the two of them and goes "er--"
"I'm joking, I'm joking," Grantaire interrupts her. "Sorry, Monsieur Enjolras, very much beg your pardon --" he leans in towards Anne and whispers: "I'm his indentured servant. But we say companions to avoid everybody calling him an hypocrite when he talks about equality --"
"I think you've made your point," Enjolras says, very quiet, and Grantaire says "When do I ever, my love?" but that all seem quite enough for Anne, who hastily says her goodbyes and leaves with no further remarks about their relationship.
He wonders if she'll gossip about it, or if Grantaire has made it awkward enough she won't. He knows he shouldn't care either way - knows he used not to consider romantic dalliances as anything of interest in general (there's enough work and problems as it is in the world to care about-), but it's been several months now that Grantaire has moved in and although they both know what this is, although none of their friends bat an eye at it, he wonders...
"You're thinking very loudly," Grantaire tells him. "Also you've been still and silent for the past five minutes. If you must know. Are you mad?"
Enjolras slowly blinks, tilting his head towards him. With Anne gone R is much calmer, though Enjolras notes the gentle flush at the back of his neck, the uncertain, troubled glint in his eye and he can't help but frown a little.
"You didn't have to tell her all this," he says. "That wasn't kind. To her, and to yourself."
"I didn't even give her one greek or roman examples," R points out, shrugging. "I think I was actually very well-behaved. What do you think she actually expected, anyway? You know what people think -- well, no, that's beyond you, which is more than fair, let me worry about silly things like outside judgement and Anne, really, is lovely, and I know her girlfriend, and she knows I live here, so, really, it's altogether not my fault she doesn't know more about all of this, and she'll have made up her mind the second she saw us, and I might be forgetting the point I was making, see? I'm very bad at that. It's been a very long day, actually, I'd enjoy us not arguing, please? Can you just talk to me all serious and maybe pet my hair a little...?"
Actually, Enjolras is half of a mind to argue anyway, but it might be a conversation they should have... later; when R is soothed, when Enjolras has figured out exactly what he wants to say, and when they both got a little bit more of what they need. He presses a palm against his forehead, breathes out slowly, and offers his other hand to Grantaire: "Come here."
Grantaire pratically leaps to intertwine their fingers, eager as either as Enjolras pulls him close against him, nuzzling his shoulder. Enjolras's mouth dries a little, as he recalls Grantaire's own self description, but he bowes his head and, carefully, presses the ghost of kiss over Grantaire's dark curls.
"Companions is sufficient," he still says, probably just a tad too severe despite himself. "I like companions."
"I love companions," Grantaire mutters his chest. "Adores it. Cherishes it. Worships it. Will commission Jehan to write a poem about it next time we see him, actually, how's that?"
My drama teacher was into les mis, and she always made us sit through it once a year. I was in junior high, and I thought it was incredibly boring. Later, in order to impress a girl I liked, who was very into Les Mis, I started listening to the songs. In the middle of One Day more when Javert sings "one more day to revolution etc etc" I just fell MADLY IN LOVE WITH THE SONG. I had no idea what was going on- I just knew I had to watch Les Mis and find out.
I really love Javert's theme. For me it condenses everything about the inspector: the rhythmic tune that really characterises his dedication to duty and could sound so collected and so angry at the same time. I hope you got the girl (;
ah that's it! I'm so incredibly moved by all your stories and what a wonderful way to spend the last day of the year!! I'm tearing up a bit I'm so touched. I've a few odd messages and I'll reply later. If you would still like to tell me how you found Les Mis I'm always listening (:
My mom was a huuuuuuge Les Mis fan before and when she was pregnant with me, and she used to clean the house blasting the soundtrack as much as she could! We watched the TAC together (granted I remembered none of it when I watched it again a few years ago). A few years later I listened to it again and knew all the words and fell in love with it! Last summer I was Fantine in an intensive student production of it and I still absolutely adore it with all my heart :)
Aw Fantine is a dream role!! Glad you got to play her. And ah I know my mum has her own one-woman cleaning song featuring renditions of Do You Hear The People Sing in four different octaves. Cleaning revolution! It makes want to cry and laugh!!
2 years ago, my voice teacher had me sing on my own and i thought it was neat. Then my sister and my mom went to see it without me (i was upset). But THEN my mom was like "hey since you didn't see it earlier would you want to go see it at this school?" and i was like HELL YEAH. Then i fell in love of course :)
Ah I think On My Own was the first song I ever heard even before I Dreamed a Dream blew up with Susan Boyle. Always takes me back! (:
A bit over a year ago, my school did a production of Les Mis. I only went to see it cause one of my friends was in it, and it was the best decision ever. Then I got the Brick two Christmases ago and I read it and then I joined Tumblr and my obsession kinda snowballed.
Hello!! Ah I got into it last Christmas too and look what's happened. I'm glad you're here and I always love seeing your URL around (:
Hi I was sort of uhm stalking your blog and I saw another anon say they just joined the fandom and are in love with aaron tveit and were obsessed with Phantom AND I AM pretty much THE EXACT SAME! I feel really lame for just joining this fandom right now and I don't have some sentimental experience of seeing les mis as a child but now that I have joined this fandom a void has been filled within my lonely soul haha I'm poetic okay bye xx
That was beautiful, haha! Ah you definitely don't have to feel like you have to have any qualifications. You are super welcome to cry over aaron tveit with us. And I can tell you straight out that too many of us fell in love with whichever Enjolras we were seeing. The fervour of revolution makes you ten times more attractive. It's a curse!
I was first introduced to Les Mis in my French class where we listened to some of the songs and read a bit of it in French. Then my mom made my brother and I see it so we would at least know what it was, and even though I resisted at first, I fell madly in love with it. Now that French teacher considers me her expert on everything Les Mis.
Ah how wonderful!! I took French for three years but grammar and I were never friends so I dropped it. (I don't regret it and I'm still struggling every time I try and decipher Les Mis-related French like hold on which of the twenty different tenses is this again) I'm really jealous that your family enjoys it so much too! (I'm phone blogging now will go back to tag these posts later, pardon)
