Pixie omg, hiii <3 <3 thank you so much 💖
what sections of a bookstore do you browse? Hah! The English Books one! it’s really small in the bookshop I usually buy from, most often i order what i need from them... BUT they have an amazing recommendations shelf that Doesn’t consist of all the bestsellers, it’s a beautiful mix ! I’ve been looking at the fantasy section again recently because of neil gaiman, and then there’s the biographies... I answered 19 and 20, buuut a specification for The Gay in 20: (what are things you look for in a book?) I’ve started to read some gay classics (like baldwin, hall and your beloved virginia), some gay biographies (some collections, natalie barney, now anne lister), aaand through some contemporary gay (like malinda lo, sarah waters)

i read wikipedia abt john lewis and don’t understand how it’s socialism in action, could you explain?
Of course! John Lewis was originally founded as a standard department store on Oxford Street in London. When Lewis’ eldest son, John Spedan Lewis, entered the business he soon became concerned that he and his family members earnt so much from the business compared to the workers. He introduced radical reforms and improvements to workers’ rights, including giving staff a say in the running of the company. Eventually he signed the business in its entirety over to the staff in perpetuity.
The John Lewis Partnership remains the largest employee-owned business in the UK. The company has a democratic structure allowing employees - known as “partners” - a say in the running of the company (tbh I don’t know how this works in practice, tho).
There are, of course, no shareholders. When other businesses pay dividends to shareholders out of profits every year, John Lewis pays each employee a yearly bonus, depending on how good profits have been that year, as a percentage of their salary. As this article shows, the value of the bonus varies considerably, depending on the store’s performance and the economy generally. However good or bad the profits are, though, they’re paid to the workers who have earnt that money, not sharehoders.
