Aujourd’hui en France: Day 5
Today we managed to get out of the house before noon! And we were able to travel to the beach! Specifically, Omaha Beach, and the American Cemetery that is there. It was really cold outside, with rain and hail. But no rain as we walked into the visitors center, then it dumped, followed by no rain when we started our tour of the cemetery, after which it started to hail, such that it was mostly bad weather, but we were able to enjoy the grounds.
Interesting fact: the movie Saving Private Ryan was based on a real family, but the rest of it was fake, meaning that Private Ryan was found quickly, without so much drama. And it eventually turned out that the third brother didn’t die, though he was a prisoner of war and not recognized as still living until after his fourth brother was already home.
Interesting fact: there are many inconnus or those whose bodies were not found (and presumed swept out to sea), but 2 of them from Minnesota were found in the past 5-10 years, located in other cemeteries, and identified by DNA.
Clara’s interesting facts: there are 45 brothers buried there, 33 of which are side by side, and one father and son that are buried together. There are also 4 women buried there, all of which were support staff that died in travel accidents.
Emilie’s observation: Yesterday we visited Verseilles, briefly, and the security madame that helped us with our stroller, and let us take it in with us, asked if we were Mormon because of the number of children, and then asked how many wives Dustin had.
